National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Among Women of Transgender Experience and Transfeminine People in Nine Cities in the United States, 2023–2024
Women of transgender experience and transfeminine people (WTE/TFP) are disproportionately impacted by HIV. Between July 2023 and May 2024, a total of 2059 eligible WTE/TFP across nine project areas participated in the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS-Trans) project. Among the 1993 participants with valid HIV test results, 35.7% were living with HIV. Detrimental social and economic factors were common, including low income (57.0%), unemp…
The Critical Role of Community-Based National HIV Behavioral Surveillance in the United States’ Response to HIV
Interest in Long-Acting PrEP by Methamphetamine Use Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Four Western US Cities
Methamphetamine use is a driver of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) and is associated with suboptimal adherence to daily, oral PrEP. Long-acting PrEP may be a promising alternative. We analyzed data from the 2023 National HIV Behavioral Surveillance survey in four western cities to assess interest in long-acting PrEP among HIV-negative MSM participants. Of 1,450 participants, 7% used methamphetamine in the past 12 months. Two-thirds were…
Improving health and housing outcomes through a simulation and economic model
Introduction: Homelessness in the United States increased every year since 2016, with a 38% increase from 2023 to 2024. Much of the increase is attributable to rising home and rent costs, economic hardship caused by the recent pandemic, and the ending of protective legislation. Notably, people who experience homelessness have an increased risk of substance use disorders, HIV infection and poorer HIV outcomes than people who are stably housed. The…
A Novel Care Navigation Intervention for Patients with Methamphetamine Use Disorder
Comparing Socio-Demographics and HIV Testing and Prevention Outcomes Between Low-Income HIV-Negative Heterosexually Active Black Women and Men with Health Insurance
Sexual behavior stigma among cisgender gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in nine NHBS cities across the United States
In the United States (US), sexuality-based stigma continues to undermine HIV prevention and care efforts. We assessed sexual behavior stigma burden across family, healthcare, and social domains and determined associations with HIV-related outcomes among cisgender gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in nine US metropolitan statistical areas. MSM ( N = 4,086) recruited at places of MSM social congregation via venue-based, time-…
Past-Year HIV Testing, Current Antiretroviral Therapy Use, and Participation in Services for People Who Inject Drugs
Factors Associated with Exchange Sex Among Cisgender Persons Who Inject Drugs
Moving the prevention timeline
INTRODUCTION: Sexual health disparities are leading causes of morbidity among youth of color in the United States. We conducted a scoping review of the literature on precursors to sexual risk-taking among young adolescents of color (ages 10-14) to assess precedents of sexual experience and their utility as measurable proximal constructs and behaviors gauging sexual risk and sexual risk prevention efforts. METHODS: This study was conducted using t…
Evaluation of Rapid Testing Algorithms for Venue-based Anonymous HIV Testing among Non-HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex with Men, National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS), 2017
HIV rapid testing algorithms (RTAs) using any two orthogonal rapid tests (RTs) allow for on-site confirmation of infection. RTs vary in performance characteristics therefore the selection of RTs in an algorithm may affect identification of infection, particularly if acute. National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) assessed RTAs among men who have sex with men recruited using anonymous venue-based sampling. Different algorithms were evaluated am…
Racial Disparities in Overdose Prevention among People Who Inject Drugs
Racial/Ethnic Disparities in HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Among Men Who Have Sex with Men — 23 Urban Areas, 2017
National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, September 27, directs attention to the impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) on gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). In 2017, MSM accounted for 67% of new diagnoses of HIV infection, and MSM who inject drugs an additional 3% (1).
Changes in HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Awareness and Use Among Men Who Have Sex with Men — 20 Urban Areas, 2014 and 2017
Human Services proposed a strategic initiative to end the human immunodeficiency (HIV) epidemic in the United States by reducing new HIV infections by 90% during 2020-2030* (1). Phase 1 of the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative focuses on Washington, DC; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and 48 counties where the majority of new diagnoses of HIV infection in 2016 and 2017 were concentrated and on seven states with a disproportionate occurrence of HIV in rur…
Assessing the Theory of Gender and Power
Early HIV Infections Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Five Cities in the United States
Knowledge of Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV Prevention Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Denver, Colorado
Payer Status, Race/Ethnicity, and Acceptance of Free Routine Opt-Out Rapid HIV Screening Among Emergency Department Patients
Objectives. We estimated associations between payer status, race/ethnicity, and acceptance of nontargeted opt-out rapid HIV screening in the emergency department (ED). Methods. We analyzed data from a prospective clinical trial between 2007 and 2009 at Denver Health. Patients in the ED were offered free HIV testing. Patient demographics and payer status were collected, and we used multivariable logistic regression to estimate associations with HI…
Same-Gender Sex in the United States
Well-conducted telephone surveys provide an economical means of estimating the prevalence of sexual and reproductive behaviors in a population. There is, however, a nontrivial potential for bias since respondents must report sensitive information to a human interviewer. The National STD and Behavior Measurement Experiment (NSBME) evaluates a new survey technology-telephone audio computer-assisted self-interviewing (T-ACASI)-that eliminates this r…
Effect of Low Medical Literacy on Health Survey Measurements
Paper self-administered questionnaires (SAQs) are a standard interviewing technique for surveys of sensitive topics. Although SAQs afford respondents greater privacy than face-to-face interviews, they have several limitations. First, they require literate respondents. Second, they require forms literacy—the ability to select consistent responses, implement general survey instructions, and correctly follow branching or skip instructions. Survey re…
