C dates funded within the contract archaeological excavations conducted along the S7 roadway on the section between Moczydło and Kraków (Lesser Poland) between 2016 and 2022
This paper presents the results of accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dating performed on archaeological samples (human bone, wood charcoal, and other charred plant macro-remains) from six sites located in the Lesser Poland Upland (southern Poland). We report 41 14 C age measurements performed on discoveries made during the contract excavations carried out during the S7 roadway construction from 2016–2022. The resulting ages fal…
Archaeology and Quality of Life in Central-European, Pre-Industrial Towns (Fourteenth to Eighteenth Centuries)
Diversification of standards of living in modern societies is one of the main research topics for economists and sociologists. Usually, economic inequalities are considered to be a natural phenomenon which trigger further progress and, in moderate amounts, are socially acceptable. However, deep inequalities are unjust and destructive and lead to conflicts. The research of contemporary inequalities in living standards mainly focuses on defining th…
Młyn Dolny w Bystrzycy na Pogórzu Kaczawskim. Zanik młynarstwa tradycyjnego w czasach industrializacji
In 2019 a research team from the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Wrocław excavated relics of a watermill, probably built in the second half of the 18th c., in the village of Bystrzyca (German Wiesenthal) near the town of Wleń in Pogórze Kaczawskie (German Bober-Katzbach-Vorgebirge), part of the Western Sudetes. A schematic picture of the mill was included in a map prepared by L.W. Regler in 1764–1770. The mill, called Młyn Dolny (th…
Dendrochronology vs. dating of complex stratigraphic sequences
The aim of the paper is to evaluate the usefulness of dendrochronological analyses in studying complex stratigraphic sequences. The problem is discussed based on the example of Wrocław, the main town of historic Silesia, where the thickness of medieval layers containing wood ranges between 3 and 5 m. The first attempts to date them using dendrochronology were made at the end of the 1980s. Some dates, or their short series, were then used as a bas…
Stone Walls as a Characteristic Feature of the Cultural Landscape of the Izera Mountains, southwestern Poland
This paper is the first comprehensive and interdisciplinary presentation of stone walls in the Central European mountains from the perspective of landscape archaeology based on field surveys and analysis of cartographic and LiDAR data. The stone walls in the Izera Mountains of southwestern Poland are the largest ones in the region, as they represent a rare case of fully enclosed fields in the Sudetes. The niches constructed within the walls are n…
Wleń/Lähn District in the Sudetes Foothills, Poland
The aim of the study is to reconstruct the evolution of the cultural landscape of a settlement microregion located in Central-Eastern Europe, in the Sudetes Foothills. The microregion selected for the research, Wleń, is a good example to study and describe phenomena that are also typical of other similar administrative and economic territories in this cultural zone during the medieval period and the modern era. Archaeological evidence, written an…
Anatomical and Biomechanical Aspects of the Horse Spine
The investigation were carried out on the medieval horses thoracic and lumbar spine excavated between 2009-2011 by the Institute of Archaeology, University of Wroclaw at New Market Square in Wroclaw (Wratislavia, Breslau), capital city of the Polish province of Lower Silesia. The pathological changes, like: ankylosis of the zygapophyses, fusion of the vertebral bodies and arches and the interspinal space calcification were observed. The X-ray exa…
