This article argues that ideology and ideological difference remain central features of modern British politics, and that ideological positioning is an important concern for political parties and is a phenomenon in need of some modelling. The article develops and applies a framework for examining the way in which ideas figure and re-figure in political discourse. The framework identifies three ‘levels’ of discourse: theory, ideology and rhetoric.
