  • Adolescents’ and young women’s perspectives on participation in biomedical clinical trials for HIV prevention in Tanzania and India

Allison Pack, Hee Do Jeon et al.•ARTICLE•Vulnerable Children and Youth…•2025•Referencias: 1

Adolescent girls and young women are disproportionately affected by HIV in many lower-resource settings. These individuals are often excluded from early clinical trials for new HIV prevention products, thus delaying potential access. We explored adolescent girls' and young women's (AGYW) perceptions of HIV risk, perspectives on trial participation, and understanding of research concepts. Individual or repeated in-depth interviews were conducted w…

  • Examining the place of the female condom in India’s family planning program

Open Access•Medhavi Weerasinghe, Shubhangi Agawane et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Female condoms have garnered support from both users and dispensers and have the potential to be widely adopted in India if family planning initiatives which increase awareness, knowledge, and access are systematically undertaken as with other contraceptive options

  • Stakeholder acceptability of adolescent participation in clinical trials for biomedical HIV prevention products

Allison Pack, Allison P Pack et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2019

Researchers and advocates have increasingly called for adolescent participation in clinical trials for new HIV prevention products, particularly adolescent girls in areas most affected by the epidemic. However, recent trials have highlighted the challenges for young women and adolescents to be able to effectively use new products that require daily dosing. This analysis provides a highly relevant context for this challenging environment by examin…

  • Impact of maternal human immunodeficiency virus infection on pregnancy and birth outcomes in Pune, India

Sandesh Patil, Ramesh Bhosale et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2011

Little is known about birth outcomes for HIV-infected women in India. We examine maternal and neonatal birth outcomes in HIV-infected women within the context of enhanced pre-natal care associated with a randomized clinical trial conducted in Pune, India. Birth outcomes of 212 HIV-infected pregnant women were compared with those of 130 HIV-uninfected pregnant women attending a government tertiary care hospital between 2002 and 2004. These women a…

  • Repeated pregnancy among women with known HIV status in Pune, India

Nishi Suryavanshi, Ashwini Erande et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2008

HIV-positive women of reproductive age face challenges in decision making related to pregnancy. Understanding factors influencing repeat pregnancies in women with known HIV status are necessary to guide interventions and counseling strategies to better inform and support them. We compared three groups of women attending a large antenatal clinic in Pune, India. They include: Group A--63 HIV-positive women coming for care for a repeat pregnancy aft…

  • Women's acceptability and husband's support of rapid HIV testing of pregnant women in India

    Anita Shankar, A V Shankar et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2003

This study examined acceptability among pregnant women and their husbands for HIV testing within the antenatal clinic (ANC) and delivery room (DR) of a government hospital in Pune, India from September 2000 to November 2001. Acceptance of HIV counselling and testing was high with 83% of eligible women in the antenatal clinic (851 of 1025) and 68% of eligible women in the delivery room (417 of 613) getting tested on the same day. Structured interv…

  • Intra family distribution of dietary energy ‐ an Indian experience

    G N V Brahmam, Jayagowri Sastry et al.•ARTICLE•Ecology of Food and Nutrition•1988

In developing countries, social and cultural bias is believed to exist, favouring a particular age and sex group in the allocation of food, medical care etc. In the present study, the intrafamily distribution of calories among preschool children and the adults was analysed. A one day recall method of diet survey conducted by the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) among 1878 rural households in 10 states of India during 1975–80 formed the…

  • The efficacy of arm circumference as a substitute for weight in assessment of protein-calorie malnutrition

Open Access•K Vijayaraghavan, Jayagowri Sastry et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1976

The efficacy of arm circumference in identifying children suffering from different degrees of undernutrition was studied on 605 rural pre-school children, using standards for height, weight and arm circumference obtained on a group of well-to-do healthy children. The results indicated that there existed 57 per cent and 73 per cent agreement in the assessment using arm circumference on one hand, and weight and weight for height respectively on the…

  • Day-to-day variation in body weights of children

Open Access•D Hanumantha Rao, Jayagowri Sastry et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1976

Day-to-day fluctuations in the body weights on five consecutive days of 54 boys and 50 girls aged between 2 and 6 years were measured. The standard deviation of the body weights over this period were of the order of +/- 0-2 kg in boys and girls. On the basis of these findings, it is suggested that only loss or gain in body weights of more than twice this amount should be taken as indicative of real change

  • A comparison of skinfold measurements by Harpenden and Best calipers

Open Access•D Hanumantha Rao, K Vijayaraghavan et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1974

Skinfold measurements at triceps were taken on 767 subjects using the Harpenden (10 g/mm2) and Best (28·5 g/mm2) calipers. The Best caliper recorded consistently lower values. Regression equations relating Harpenden to Best values are given. The results of duplicate measurements made with a single caliper and without letting go the skinfold are given.ZusammenfassungHautfalten-Masse wurden an dreiköpfigen Muskeln von 767 Beispielen unter Benützung…
