School‐Based Health Center Use for Mental and Behavioral Health Disorders Before and After the Covid ‐19 Pandemic
BACKGROUND: School-based health centers (SBHCs) provide accessible healthcare for children, but not all have dedicated mental health providers. The COVID-19 pandemic and school shutdowns were associated with worsened student mental health, but the impact on the utilization of SBHCs without mental health providers remains unclear. This study examines utilization before and after school shutdowns at one such SBHC. METHODS: Data are from a SBHC at a…
Parents' Perceptions of Schools' Covid ‐19 Mitigation Strategies
BACKGROUND: At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, schools closed across the United States. Given the impact of virtual learning and lost access to school resources, schools eventually reopened with COVID-19 mitigation protocols in place. This qualitative study sought to understand parental perceptions of school-based COVID-19 mitigation strategies. METHODS: Using a phenomenology approach, nine focus groups were completed with 40 parents of child…
Water governance challenges at a local level
Considering that the current water crisis is largely a governance crisis, improving water governance will help to address current and future water challenges. Water governance is defined as the range of political, institutional and administrative rules, practices and processes through which decisions are taken and implemented, stakeholders can articulate their interests and have their concerns considered, and decision makers are held accountable …
Identifying and preventing fraudulent responses in online public health surveys
Web-based survey data collection has become increasingly popular, and limitations on in-person data collection during the COVID-19 pandemic have fueled this growth. However, the anonymity of the online environment increases the risk of fraudulent responses provided by bots or those who complete surveys to receive incentives, a major risk to data integrity. As part of a study of COVID-19 and the return to in-person school, we implemented a web-bas…
Business Literacy and Development
The poor in developing countries often run small enterprises, typically with low earnings, although lacking basic business skills. We offer a business skills course to female entrepreneurs in rural Mexico. We find that those randomly assigned to treatment have larger profits and revenues, serve a greater number of clients, and are more likely to use formal accounting techniques. These effects persist in the medium run. We present a simple model t…
Análise Do Campo Térmico E Higrométrico Na Cidade De Tapejara/Pr
Opportunity versus Necessity
Entrepreneurs that voluntarily choose to start a business because they are able to identify a good business opportunity and act on it -- opportunity entrepreneurs -- might be different along various dimensions from those who are forced to become entrepreneurs because of lack of other alternatives -- necessity entrepreneurs. To provide evidence on these differences, this paper exploits a unique data set covering a wide array of characteristics, in…
The Beheading of Criminal Organizations and the Dynamics of Violence in Mexico
In 2006, the Mexican government launched an aggressive campaign to weaken drug-trafficking organizations (DTOs). The security policies differed significantly from those of previous administrations in the use of a leadership strategy (the targeting for arrest of the highest levels or core leadership of criminal networks). While these strategies can play an important role in disrupting the targeted criminal organization, they can also have unintend…
The relationship between phonological awareness and writing
The main objective in this study was to explore the relationship between phonological awareness and writing development in monolingual Spanish speaking children. The main hypothesis were 1) Phonological awareness development is closely related to children’s writing development and 2) the introduction of writing stimuli in phonological awareness tasks enhances the production of more analytical responses, even in pre-literate children. Subjects wer…
