The fatedness of place
Provincializing Global Sport
Global sport, particularly football (soccer), provides scenes of sensuous juxtapositions from which to grasp the world, for example of global hegemonic capitalism and local histories of difference. Three events shook the elite sport world in 2021–2022: the intent to establish a European Super League, Leo Messi's departure from FC Barcelona, and Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué's involvement in selling the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia. These c…
Corporeal performance in contemporary ethnonationalist movements
Over the past ten years, the Catalan independence movement has intensified and gained considerable social support. State–region relations hit bottom in late 2019, when demonstrations and night street fights occurred as a result of the Constitutional Court decision to imprison Catalan pro-independence politicians. In the Basque Country, a reverse process may be observed: after decades of its violent ‘Troubles’, the Basque Country now enjoys peace …
Sport and Secessionism
Transcending Defeat through Play
In defeat, many aspects of society get dismantled, including the cultural, religious, political and social organisation of the vanquished. Geographical borders may change, languages may disappear, and people may go into exile. While history is written by victors, losers must still create their own subtext. Between rupture and continuity, they have to reassemble their shattered selves, transform in some ways, and remain the same in others. They mu…
Where extremes meet
In this essay, we trace the symbolic conundrums of belonging and of the reconciliation of identities, in the context of Catalan and Scottish sport and politics. Our discussion will commence with a necessarily concise consideration of past academic contentions regarding the national “psyches,” which have been argued to shape contemporary notions of identity and politics in Catalonia and Scotland, before turning our attention to the specific role o…
Somos distintos o estamos locos?
Death in the town square
Human tower building (castells) is a two-hundred-year-old traditional sport in Catalonia (Spain), which has boomed since the democratic Transition (1975) as a national symbol and low-cost intergenerational pastime activity. In 2006, however, a child performer died as a result of a collapse. Catalonia responded with profound grief, and the human tower community embarked on a process of 'overcoming' (superació), whose success was made contingent on…
The American Dream in Postsocialist Hungary
Hungarian-born, 3-time Olympic champion Katinka Hosszú and her American coach-husband Shane Tusup revolutionized elite swimming through a training methodology that produced one of the most spectacular comebacks in sport history and turned Hosszú into the financially most successful swimmer. In Hungary, they were considered the “American Dream” due to their Hollywoodish love story, can-do attitude, and professional success. The Hosszú–Tusup collab…
Football, the Beast, and the Sovereign
As of 2017, Spain is facing the greatest challenge to its post-Franco unity as Catalonia prepares to unilaterally declare independence in spite of a constitutional ban. The crisis of European sovereignty due to state-region antagonisms emerges forcefully in culture. A key domain for the contestation of power relationships is mockery and joking through the use of animal imagery. In particular, the jeering of the Spanish sovereign and the national …
Dangerous liaisons, fatal women
Critical feminist analysis has produced much important work on women in the gender regime of men's sport. The protagonists of these studies have been mostly female athletes, fans, managers and journalists. This article focuses on yet another female persona in men's sport: the lover. Complementing research that identifies wives and girlfriends (WAGs) as helpmates who fulfill traditional auxiliary roles to their athlete partners, this article prese…
Catalonia's human towers
Spain is facing the greatest challenge in the post-Franco era to the nation's constitutional unity, as the Catalonian government in October 2015 issued a motion to unilaterally declare Catalonia's independence. The independence movement helped build support by using a 200-year-old cultural performance, the building of human towers (castells). The movement discarded other cultural performances (soccer, the sardana dance, and fire festivals), drawi…
The Spanish Fury
Soccer in Spain functions as a powerful ideological apparatus. Historically, the under-performance of the national selection ('Spanish Fury') was attributed to a lack of patriotism on part of players from ethno-regional peripheries. The recent successes (2008, 2012 Euro Cup and 2010 World Cup) of Spanish soccer are hailed as proof of a modern country that has finally overcome its regional divisions. Or has it? This article will explore soccer as …
Death in theCathedral
This article discusses an emerging mortuary practice: the establishment of columbaria in sport stadiums, and surreptitious ash dispersal on their playing fields. Focusing on aSpanish-Basque fan community, I explore ethnographically the beliefs, identifications, and experiences that allow fans to think their insertion, once dead, into a football stadium. Contrary to the view that considers the mobility of ash remains as a result of increasing indi…
Subversive Pleasures, Losing Games
The following article addresses the socio-cultural significance of a unique recruiting philosophy in the first division Spanish soccer Liga: the Basque-only policy of Athletic Bilbao. The Basque club is one of three clubs (besides Real Madrid FC and Barcelona FC) in Spain that have never been relegated to the second division throughout their centenarian history. Athletic contributed to Spanish soccer history in three ways: by importing the game f…
