The field of the visual is the new terrain for rumour mongering and for maiming uncomfortable oppositional voices. With the fast-spreading mobile culture, penetrating social media and continued legacy of the pictorial as an embodiment of the real, the visual has taken over both the oral as well as the written words in its usefulness to serve …

  • From Rangdāri Tax to Rangrezi

    Open Access•Sadan Jha•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Values•2019•Referencias: 3

Rangrez and Rangdār are two commonly used words in north India. ‘Rangrez’ is a painter/dyer, and in Sufi tradition is also a word for Allah. ‘Rangdāri’ is an illegal extortion tax, and the person who collects this tax is called the ‘Rangdār’. In all likelihood, ‘Rangdāri tax’ originates from the geo-political landscape of coal and mining regions of India (in districts which are now in the state of Jharkhand). The term is closely linked with the r…

    Open Access•Sadan Jha•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Values•2015•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

A venture in a less traversed terrain of Indian scholarship, this article looks at the transformation in the value regimes that go into the making of colours in the Indian milieu. At one level, this study traces the sacredness imbued in colours and at another level the article delves into the genealogy that gives rise to a complex where colour, colonial investment in the economy of colours (with an aim at capitalizing colours as commodities), val…

Open Access•Sadan Jha•ARTICLE•History and Sociology of South Asia•2014

Looking at a corpus of proverbs (folk sayings) known as Dā k vachan this article explores the ways in which these sayings constitute a field of knowledge production in contemporary Mithila (north Bihar) revealing claims along the trajectories of caste, gender and historical lineages. Addressed to different aspects of agrarian life, presence of these sayings in the Maithil agrarian society also suggests a complicated and contested relation between…

  • Challenges in the history of colours

This article delineates the emergence of saffron as a colour of national importance in the late 1920s, when Nehru recognised it as an ‘old colour’, and Suniti Kumar Chatterji claimed that it was symbolic of ‘Indian life’, thus elevating it from its humble position as a kacha colour. The need to assess such claims has prompted a longue durée approach to unravel the complexities of writing a history of colours in the Indian milieu. An attempt has b…

Also known as the old Purnea district of Bihar, this region has been historically visualised as unhealthy and backward. Following Michel Foucault’s notion of heterotopia, the article argues that Renu’s craftsmanship renders the backwardness of this region in a manner that highlights …
