Interpersonal problems of cocaine dependent adults differ from those of a normative sample
Our research examined patterns of interpersonal problems in patients with a primary diagnosis of cocaine dependence (CD), comparing them with those in a normative sample. We hypothesized that the patterns of individuals with CD would reveal constellations of interpersonal problems distinct from those of the sample, not only at baseline, but also at termination of treatment. Analysis was conducted on 402 CD patients from the training and the main …

The Development of a Psychoanalytic Outcome Study
This article tells the story of the development of an outcome study of psychoanalysis and describes the debate that took place over critical methodological issues. The protocol committee included career psychotherapy researchers who have conducted rigorous outcome studies, clinical psychoanalysts, study methodologists, and a statistician with clinical trial expertise. The committee worked for two years to develop the study design. This project is…
Designs for Studying the Effectiveness of Long-Term Psychoanalytic Treatments
Long-Term Psychoanalytic Treatments (LTPT) include both long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy (LTPP) and psychoanalysis (PsAn). Current opinion seems to be that there is some evidence for the effectiveness of LTPP, but none for that of PsAn. This may be due in part to researchers not balancing the level of evidence of randomized controlled studies (RCTs), cohort studies, and pre-post studies with patients’ acceptance of these various research de…

Background: In the context of a National Institutes of Mental Health-funded Interventions and Practice Research Infrastructure Programs (IP-RISP) grant for the treatment of depression, a partnership was developed between a community mental health organization and a team of researchers

Echoes of the Trauma
Echoes of trauma are traced in the relational narratives that the sons and daughters of Holocaust survivors tell about their experiences growing up in survivor families. An innovative combination of the Core Conflictual Relationship Theme (CCRT) method with narrative-qualitative analysis revealed common themes and emotional patterns that are played out in the survivors' children's meaningful relationships, especially in those with their parents. …
The role of the alliance and techniques in predicting outcome of supportive-expressive dynamic therapy for cocaine dependence
We examine the complex relations among therapeutic alliance, adherence to Supportive-Expressive Therapy (SET), therapist competence, and their interactions in predicting change in drug use. Experts rated early therapy sessions of cocaine dependent patients (n 108) randomized to SET as part of the Collaborative Cocaine Treatment Study. Moderate adherence to SET and competent delivery of SET were separately associated with poorer outcome. Further, …
Supportive-expressive psychodynamic therapy for cocaine dependence
Using data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse Collaborative Cocaine Treatment Study, this article focuses on the outcomes of patients who received supportive-expressive (SE) psychodynamically-oriented psychotherapy (plus group drug counseling; GDC). Short-term SE for cocaine dependent individuals, while not the most efficacious treatment examined in the study (individual drug counseling [IDC] plus GDC was), produced large improvements in c…
Anger, guilt, and intergenerational communication of trauma in the interpersonal narratives of second generation Holocaust survivors
The nature and expression of anger and guilt in sons and daughters of Holocaust survivors were studied by a quantitative and qualitative analysis of relationship narratives. Findings are discussed in relation to the reciprocal overprotectiveness between the surviving parents and their children in the context of intergenerational communication of trauma
Change After Long-Term Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
Psychoanalytic psychotherapy in clinical practice is traditionally a long-term treatment conducted by well-trained psychotherapists. However, very few studies have been published that evaluate the effects of such treatment. To redress this lack of studies, 55 individuals selected for long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy (average, 3 years) were invited to participate in a naturalistic study. The psychotherapists had a mean of 15 years of profess…

The Karolinska Psychodynamic Profile (Kapp)
The Karolinska Psychodynamic Profile (KAPP) is a rating instrument that consists of 18 subscales for assessing different aspects of character from clinical interviews. The psychometric properties of the instrument, including reliability, stability, and some earlier validity studies, are reviewed. The present validity study of the KAPP examines aspects of affect control and its relation to other state and trait measures as well as to psychopatholo…

Personality Predictors of Dimensions of Psychosocial Adjustment After Surgery
OBJECTIVE: Although many studies have examined the relationship between personality factors and adjustment after surgery, most of them have had very short follow-up periods. The present prospective study examines whether preoperative psychodynamic assessment of personality traits enhances prediction of various areas of psychosocial adjustment assessed at least 1 year after surgery. METHODS: In 53 patients undergoing pelvic pouch surgery for ulcer…
