Uncovering Social Network Activity Using Joint User and Topic Interaction
The emergence of online social platforms, such as social networks and social media, has drastically affected the way people apprehend the information flows to which they are exposed. In such platforms, various information cascades spreading among users is the main force creating complex dynamics of opinion formation, each user being characterized by their own behavior adoption mechanism. Moreover, the spread of multiple pieces of information or b…

Manifesto of computational social science
The increasing integration of technology into our lives has created unprecedented volumes of data on society’s everyday behaviour. Such data opens up exciting new opportunities to work towards a quantitative understanding of our complex social systems, within the realms of a new discipline known as Computational Social Science. Against a background of financial crises, riots and international epidemics, the urgent need for a greater comprehension…
Modelling collective phenomena in neuroscience
This paper shows how concepts and tools borrowed from statistical physics might be useful for modelling biological systems. This is illustrated by specific examples taken from the study of neural dynamics. The relevance for neuroscience of the notion of 'collective phenomena', for which statistical physics gives appropriate modelling tools, is discussed
Physique statistique de phénomènes collectifs en sciences économiques et sociales
This article shows how statistical physics may contribute to the modelling of collective phenomena in economics and social science. The main topic here is the study of the global (aggregate) behavior of a large population, when the agents make choices under social influence. We present several examples, starting from pioneering works in economics and sociology, such as those of T. Schelling whose approach has all the flavour of physicists’ approa…

Interacting Agents and Continuous Opinions Dynamics
We present a model of opinion dynamics in which agents adjust continuous opinions as a result of random binary encounters whenever their difference in opinion is below a given threshold. High thresholds yield convergence of opinions towards an average opinion, whereas low thresholds result in several opinion clusters. The model is further generalised to network interactions, threshold heterogeneity, adaptive thresholds and binary strings of opini…
Crime and punishment
Crime is an economically important activity, sometimes called the industry of crime. It may represent a mechanism of wealth distribution but also a social and economic charge because of the cost of the law enforcement system. Sometimes it may be less costly for the society to allow for some level of criminality. A drawback of such policy may lead to a high increase of criminal activity that may become hard to reduce. We investigate the level of l…
