Errors in Linguistic Landscape of Ulan-Ude
This paper examines errors in Buryat and Russian texts within the linguistic landscape of Ulan-Ude, the capital of the Republic of Buryatia, and investigates the underlying causes for their occurrence. The research material comprises 94 public signs in the two languages, identified from a larger sample of over 3,000 signs. Through an errratological analysis applied to the study of linguistic landscape, the study demonstrates the presence of ortho…
Boris Zingerman. Letters to the Teachers (Publication, Introductory Article and Comments)
The letters of Boris Zingerman (1928–2000) to the older generation of theatre critics, Grigory Boyadzhiev (1909–1974) and Boris Alpers (1894–1974), were written at different times and on different occasions. What unites the two letters is that they were addressed to Zingerman’s teachers at the State Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS), where he studied at the theatre studies department (1945–1950) and then did a postgraduate course (1950–1954). How…

Reformation, Power, Society
The article deals with the Marxist-Leninist heritage in studying the European Reformation in contemporary Russian historiography. The author postulates that the concepts of “moderate-burgheran” or “radical-burgheran” reformation are incorrect and do not reflect the diversity of historical processes. The conclusion is made that the realities of the reformation movement represented a more complex picture, which does not fit into the rigid framework…
Innovative territory as a basic element in the spatial structure of the national innovation system
This paper defines the economic category of “state regional innovative development policy.” An integrated approach to policy design and implementation promoting regional innovation-based growth corresponds to the strategic objective of improving overall quality of life and makes it possible to solve a broad range of issues, including stimulation of innovation, deployment of new production facilities, and mitigation of the negative impact of human…

Problems of Ethnosemiotics
In researching exchange as an "integral social fact," Mauss and his school, as well as Hocart and Needham, came to the conclusion that in ancient times there existed a nondifferentiated society, in which the exchange of social and material values (including "the exchange of partners"—i.e., spouses—according to Lévi-Strauss), ritualized mutual relations, and activity equivalent to the arts in contemporary society are regarded as virtually indistin…

Language Systems and Principles of Reconstruction in Linguistics
Two levels can be distinguished in the structure of a language as a system of signs: the level of expression and the level of contents. Every sign of a language will thus be characterized by the unity of these two aspects. We can distinguish therein the signifying (.signans) and the signified (signatum), which correspond to the two levels of the language. Relations between the signifying and the signified in linguistic signs are determined by the…
The Migrations of Tribes Speaking the Indo-European Dialects from Their Original Homeland in the Near East to Their Historical Habitations in Eurasia
The historical distribution and routes of migration of the principal ancient Indo-European ethnic groups who first appear in ancient written records - the Hittite-Luwians, Indo-Iranians, and Greeks (the Cretan-Mycenae an Greeks and the Achaeans of Hittite sources) - can be explained more easily if one assumes that the territory of the original Indo-European homeland coincided with a region contained within eastern Anatolia, the southern Caucasus,…
The Ancient Near East and the Indo-European Problem
The main question associated with the problem of the actual existence of a common Indo-European proto-language in space and time is the question of chronology and the territory occupied by the Proto-Indo-European language, the break-up of which led to the formation of related historical dialects. The lower chronological limit for establishing the period of existence of a proto-language is deduced first of all on the basis of the dating of written…
