Metallurgical Slags and Ore Fragments from the Kamenny Ambar Bronze Age Settlement (Southern Urals)
The paper presents the characteristics of metallurgical slags and copper ore fragments from the Kamenny Ambar settlement of the Bronze Age. According to the mineral and chemical compositions we have distinguished two types of the slags: Cr-rich spinel containing olivine slags and sulfide-containing olivine slags. The Cr-rich spinel containing olivine slags are the product of oxidized ore from the copper deposits in ultramafic rocks exploited in t…

Trace Elements in Ancient Gold Products with PGE Microinclusions from Archaeological Sites of the Urals and North Black Sea Region
Many archaeological gold products of the Urals and North Black Sea region contain microinclusions of platinum group minerals (PGMs). The trace element composition of these products was studied using LA–ICP–MS to reveal their microgeochemical features, the differences in the trace element composition of PGM‐bearing and PGM‐free products, and the source of gold. Owing to the presence of microinclusions of ruthenium, osmium and iridium, the gold pro…
The Phenomenon of the Influence of Gold Melt on Microinclusions of Platinum Group Minerals in Ancient Gold Objects
This study focuses on microinclusions of platinum group minerals (PGMs) in gold objects from the South Urals and North Black Sea archaeological sites. We demonstrate for the first time that melting of gold during archaeometallurgical work affects PGM microinclusions. Desquamation of primary PGM microinclusions with 28–55 wt% Os in the melt and their oxidation by hot air microbubbles results in the formation of secondary particles with 1–20 wt% Os…
Platinoid Microinclusions of Native Osmium Group in Ancient Gold Artifacts From Siberia and Urals as a Source of Geoarchaeological Information
The analysis of Early Iron Age gold jewelry from Hankarinsky Dol and Inskoy Dol in the Altai, Arzhan II royal mound in Tuva, and Filippovka I and II royal mounds in the Southern Urals, has detected platinoid inclusions similar to those in artifacts from the Near East. Their morphology and composition suggest that gold was mined from placer deposits located near the gold and platinum bearing ultramafi c belts. Microinclusions consist of solid solu…
Bronze Age Copper Mining in the Mugodzhary
This study presents the results of geoarcheological research carried out at 19 copper ore sites belonging to the Mugodzhary mining and metallurgical center. Four types of copper ores differing in geological setting, body structure, reserve grade as well as mineral and chemical composition, were mined at the center. The geographic coordinates and the main parameters of mines (morphology, quarry size, and ore body) are specified along with the scop…
Copper Mines, Chromite Copper Ores and Slags of the Ishkinino Bronze Age Archaeological Microregion, The Southern Urals
The study addresses copper mines structure and composition of copper ores and slags at the Ishkinino archaeological microregion, Orenburg Province. Both ores and slags contain chromites derived from the host ultrabasite rock. Chromites were subdivided into three categories in terms of Cr2O3 content: 45–50%, 50–55%, and 55–61%. The proportions are similar to those observed in chromites of the malachite ores of the Ishkinino cobalt-copper-pyrite de…
The “Osmium Trace” in Mineral Inclusions in Ancient Gold Artifacts
Micro-inclusions of minerals of the osmium group were detected in Ural golden ornaments dating from the 15th century BC – 9th century AD. All of these minerals belong to the high-temperature iridium subgroup. The diversity of composition and morphology of inclusions point to their placer origin. Their sources are placers related to ultrabasite deposits of the large faults of the Ural Fold Zone. The authors suggest a method of detecting osmium min…
