This article engages with key questions concerning diversity training issues and trends related to media professionals in contemporary Europe. It draws on interviews with 68 senior journalists and media professionals working in six Member States of the European Union. The study on which this article is based included interview questions on four aspects of ethno-cultural diversity in European media (content, recruitment, newsmaking and training), …
Knowing what it means to be Irish
This article derives from sociological research examining practitioners in the Irish advertising industry. Drawing from interviews with workers in this field, I examine how Irish advertising practitioners have co-opted the 'idiom of identity', enabling them to speak with greater confidence and in more emotionally compelling ways about advertising audiences, to humanize business strategy and to operationalize personal biographical experience in pr…
Analysing an Advertising Campaign
This article critically examines an advertising campaign for Smithwick's ale that is known as the 'locals' campaign and was televised in Ireland throughout the 1990s. My intention is not to 'explain' the campaign but to suggest an analytical approach that captures and preserves its sociological complexity.
