Socialist advisers and the dilemmas of the ‘socialist world system’
The dilemmas and tensions of the Sino-Soviet relationship in the 1950s were reproduced in Guinea-Conakry in the 1960s in the era of Decolonization. Socialist advisers brought their ‘Agreements on Scientific and Technical Collaboration’ as well as their socialist assumptions and activities to both China in the 1950s and Guinea-Conakry after 1958. By examining the socialist advisers’ activities, this article reveals that in both cases the advisers …

Jeronim Perović. From Conquest to Deportation
The title of Jeronim Perović’s From Conquest to Deportation: The North Caucasus under Russian Rule refers to the Russian imperial exile of the North Caucasus mountain peoples to the Ottoman Empire in 1864, and then to the Soviet-era deportations of these peoples to Central Asia in 1943–1944. Perović resists the idea of this tragic history as simply exploitive or “colonial” and instead tries to highlight cases and characters that illustrate collab…
Socialist exhibits and Sino-Soviet relations, 1950–60
Socialist bloc exhibits in China in the 1950s communicated ideas about the future prosperity and development to be brought to China in the wake of its alliance with the socialist world, the role of socialism in preserving and maintaining folk and traditional culture, and the role of the bloc in extending the virtues of European high culture to the East. The Soviets proudly displayed Russia’s historic contribution to high culture as well as inform…
Socialist Internationalism in the Cold War
Shu Guang Zhang. Beijing’s Economic Statecraft during the Cold War, 1949–1991
In contrast to studies that focus on U.S.-Chinese normalization after 1978, Shu Guang Zhang describes the global international and economic history of the People’s Republic of China since 1949. China’s version of “economic statecraft,” or “a government’s ability, intent, policy and preparedness to use economic instruments in pursuit of foreign policy goals,” was profoundly shaped by the Sino-Soviet relationship and China’s experience in the socia…

Alexander Etkind. Internal Colonization
Much of Russian history, suggests Alexander Etkind in this pioneering work, was shaped by the “imperial experience,” which included the simultaneous process of the “internal colonization” of both people and space—of Russian peasants and the interior provinces of the empire. “The characteristic phenomena of colonialism,” he concludes, “such as missionary work, exotic journeys, and ethnographic scholarship, were directed inwards toward the Russian …
TED Hopf. Reconstructing the Cold War
The great betrayal
Former Soviet diplomats Iu.M. Galenovich and V.P. Fedotov remain oblivious to the significant tensions in Sino-Soviet relations during the 1950s that contributed to the Sino-Soviet split. Further, they remain unapologetic for a host of issues that plagued the relationship and continue to bother contemporary Chinese historians and commentators. Their memory of Soviet history, diplomacy, and the Sino-Soviet relationship is shaped by Russia's contem…
The Soviet State as Imperial Scavenger
THE BIGGEST PRIZE SOUGHT by the Soviet Union in its newly acquired postwar territory was the bomb itself-or initially the defense-related industries, research specialists, and scientists in the German zone deemed useful to achieving this goal. 1 The Soviets similarly made arrangements to benefit from uranium deposits in Ja ́chymov, Czechoslovakia, from the fall of 1945. 2 The effort to develop the bomb, however, was merely the most visible expres…

Orientalism and Empire
The complex and troubled history of Russia's relationship with the mountain peoples of the North Caucasus
The Dilemmas of Enlightenment in the Eastern Borderlands
The Russian field is quickly accumulating a wide variety of works on Russian imperialism. These works now rival the field of colonial studies on the Western empires, and include explorations of imperial ideology, the multiethnic service elite, educational policy, missionary activities, cultural borrowing and interaction among the diverse peoples of the empire, and native responses and challenges to Russian rule.1 The new studies often venture out…

Rethinking Russia From Zardob
Many non-Russians in the Russian Empire were active members of imperial educated society (obshchestvo) , and they often conceived of the colonial advance of Russia as part of the march of the progressive West and “civilization” itself into the backward lands of the East. Reformist empire builders who criticized the brutal wars and population transfers that marked the conquest of the southern borderlands also emphasized the civilizing mission of t…
Ethnic Modernity and the Russian Empire
Late Imperial Russian society experienced a time of profound social and cultural change in spite of the fact that aristocratic privilege and monarchical power endured until 1917. Contemporary writers bear witness to an emerging working-class consciousness in the cities, a peasant culture increasingly in contact with the wider world of the city and beyond, and a literary culture shaped by the latest currents in the experimental modernism of the We…
