Associations between environmental burdens and modifiable lifestyle risk factors among cancer survivors in NCI's HINTS-Seer survey
BACKGROUND: Improving cancer survivorship outcomes is a priority in cancer prevention and control. As global cancer incidence rises each year, cancer survivors are living longer and are uniquely susceptible to developing subsequent chronic conditions. Current strategies for preventing chronic conditions emphasize modifying risk factors including lifestyle and environmental exposures. PURPOSE: However, few studies have analyzed how multiple pollut…
Rural‐specific identity and associations with lifestyle behaviors and well‐being among rural cancer survivors
BACKGROUND: Disparities in rural cancer survivors' health outcomes are well-documented, yet the role of sociocultural aspects of rurality, such as rural identity, attitudes toward rurality, and social standing on health beliefs and behaviors remain unclear. This study aimed to address these gaps. METHODS: Rural cancer survivors (N = 188) completed a mailed/online survey. Regression analyses identified relationships among rural identity, negative …
Spatially Varying Associations of Neighborhood Disadvantage with Alcohol and Tobacco Retail Outlet Rates
More than 30% of cancer related deaths are related to tobacco or alcohol use. Controlling and restricting access to these cancer-causing products, especially in communities where there is a high prevalence of other cancer risk factors, has the potential to improve population health and reduce the risk of specific cancers associated with these substances in more vulnerable population subgroups. One policy-driven method of reducing access to these …
Associations of Alcohol and Tobacco Retail Outlet Rates with Neighborhood Disadvantage
Tobacco causes 29% of cancer-related deaths while alcohol causes 5.5% of cancer-related deaths. Reducing the consumption of these cancer-causing products is a special priority area for the National Cancer Institute. While many factors are linked to tobacco and alcohol use, the placement and density of retail outlets within neighborhoods may be one community-level risk factor contributing to greater use of these products. To elucidate associations…
Refining the Factor Structure of the All Aspects of Health Literacy Scale
Objective: Although the All Aspects of Health Literacy Scale (AAHLS) is a commonly used measure of health literacy, the psychometric evaluation approach employed in its original validation is questionable. In this study, we evaluated the psychometric properties and factor structure of the AAHLS using widely-accepted analytic methods. Methods: We collected data from 393 students from a Mid-Atlantic university. Participants completed the AAHLS in a…
Engaging with the Richmond Community to Reduce Pediatric Asthma Disparities
Childhood asthma disparities persist, with children living in low-income areas experiencing worse morbidity. We partnered with a community-academic research team and stakeholders to conduct a needs assessment to understand barriers and supports to asthma treatment. We convened a community advisory board, comprised of parents of children with asthma, youth with asthma, and members of key community organizations. Two focus groups with parents of ch…
Caregiver Daily Experiences Associated with Child Asthma Symptoms
Findings highlight the need for researchers and clinicians to recognize that both asthma (ie, ability to control asthma) and non-asthma related factors (ie, factors related to neighborhoods) may be associated with caregivers' perceptions of their children's asthma symptoms. Perceptions of child symptoms have important consequences for daily asthma care, including decisions related to healthcare utilization
