Scripture and Martyrdom
The Bible played a foundational role in early Christian reflection on martyrdom. This is most evidently the case with the concept of the imitatio Christi , which was based on many biblical quotations and allusions. Individualization and the Cult of the Martyrs
Individual experience and space for individual behaviour admitted or taken in rituals lie at the heart of this chapter. Its examples from the fourth century Cappadocian cult of the martyrs do not offer a basis to hypothesize on long-term developments, but they attest to circumstances and a period that could be described as of ‘modest individualization’.

The writings and sermons of the Cappadocian Fathers were deeply indebted to the inheritance of the classical rhetoric of the Second Sophistic.
