Critical questioning with generative AI
Transforming science teacher education in the era of generative artificial intelligence
Since generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has emerged as a transformative force in science teaching, learning, and evaluation, countries worldwide have launched initiatives and professional development programs to equip science teachers with essential AI competencies. This paper provides a comparative review of science teacher education on GenAI across eight countries: Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Ghana, Singapore, South Korea, and t…
Can Generative AI support the learning agency of students with disability? A case study of an Australian secondary school
Despite increasing interest in using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in education, little is known about how students with disability engage with GenAI to support their own learning. This study investigates the potential of ChatGPT to support the learning agency of adolescents with disability in a secondary science classroom in Australia. Guided by sociocultural and socio‐material conceptualisations of agency, the study explored the me…
Using generative artificial intelligence to reimagine feedback in higher education
This article examines the potential of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to reshape feedback practices in higher education. It reports on a proof-of-concept study in which teacher educators recorded oral feedback. These recordings were uploaded to a customised ChatGPT model and restructured in alignment with the assessment rubric. Educators then edited the text to ensure accuracy, appropriate tone, and alignment with the rubric. Using co…
Making sense together
With the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022, Large Language Models (LLMs) have been increasingly used in classrooms to support teaching and learning. However, the nature of communication between students and LLMs remains under-examined. The current study explored this communication through the lens of Paul Grice’s cooperative principle, examining the extent to which students and ChatGPT adhered to Gricean maxims of quantity, quality, relation and ma…
The Role of Materiality in an Era of Generative Artificial Intelligence
The introduction of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools like ChatGPT has raised many challenging questions about the nature of teaching, learning, and assessment in every subject area, including science. Unlike other disciplines, natural science is unique because the ontological and epistemological understanding of nature is fundamentally rooted in our interaction with material objects in the physical world. GenAI, powered by statist…
Exploring bias in artificial intelligence
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has revolutionized many aspects of our daily lives, including how we interact with and perceive media. GenAI's capability to generate images, especially AI models like DALL-E, has opened new avenues for visual representation. However, these technological advancements are deeply intertwined with societal norms and narratives, particularly concerning gendered roles and professions. Content analysis was uti…
Promoting First Nations science capital
This article offers a critical examination of First NationsFootnote1 perspectives in the newly revised Australian Science Curriculum. Despite recent revisions, our analysis indicates that the curriculum continues to marginalise and overlook the rich scientific contributions of First Nations communities in Australia. We employ a science capital lens to probe the design of the curriculum. While the curriculum incorporates elaborations related to Fi…
Examining Science Education in ChatGPT
The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential in the field of education. The study explores three main areas: (1) How did ChatGPT answer questions related to science education? (2) What are some ways educators could utilise ChatGPT in their science pedagogy? and (3) How has ChatGPT been utilised in this study, and what are my reflections about its use as a research tool? This exploratory research applies a …
Associations between Australian students’ literacy achievement in early secondary school and senior secondary participation in science
Many factors are claimed to explain Australian students’ declining participation rates in senior secondary science subjects. These include, for instance, the influences of SES, indigeneity, and gender. While acknowledging the compelling case for these factors affecting student pathways, in this study we explore associations between students’ literacy achievement test scores in early secondary school and their senior secondary participation in sci…
Designing an Immersive Virtual Reality Classroom Exploring Behaviour Support Strategies
In this research the authors explore ClasSimVR, a proof-of-concept immersive virtual reality ( ivr ) application. This software is designed to support pre-service teachers ( pst s) implementation of a School-Wide Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports ( swpbis ) approach to challenging student behaviours. ClasSimVR offers users the opportunity to engage with immersive hypothetical scenarios, whereby virtual students display challenging beh…
Demographic predictors of senior secondary participation in biology, physics, chemistry and earth/space sciences
Adding to concerns about falling participation rates in science education, the profile of certain student groups who go on to study decreases, particularly as the year level increases. The aim of this paper is to examine if, and in what ways, demographic factors predict students’ post-16 participation in biology, physics, chemistry and earth/space sciences. The study was conducted in Australia, drawing on data from over 4,300 students. Characteri…
The relationship between physical activity levels and symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress in individuals with alopecia Areata
81.9% of the participants did not meet PA guidelines. Participants with hair loss of more than 50% on the scalp, and who did not meet PA guidelines, were significantly more likely to experience symptoms of severe depression (p = .003), moderate anxiety (p = .04) and mild stress (p = .003) than those who met guidelines CONCLUSION: Findings suggest that increased PA participation in AA individuals with severe hair loss is associated with improved m…
Examining geography as a predictor of students’ university intentions
While improving educational aspirations has been positioned by various stakeholders (e.g. governments, researchers, educators) as an important part of increasing higher education participation, there appears to be disagreement in the literature about this relationship. If a key goal of eliciting students’ educational aspirations is to reliably predict future university participation, researchers should choose aspiration measures supported by evid…
