New Approaches to Identifying Roman Libraries
The identification of Roman libraries has long been the subject of debate, with architectural models, written sources and the archaeological record offering seemingly incompatible perspectives. Mamoli, however, has proposed a solution that deploys computational techniques for studying shape grammar to develop library grammar. This is a computational methodology that identifies minimal units of architectural meaning and the ways they may combine t…
An Experiment Measuring Water Consumption in Roman Hydrophobic Mortar ( opus signinum)
Opus signinum is a lime mortar mix that includes crushed pottery as an aggregate. Because it is water-resistant, it was used to line hydraulic structures like pools and aqueducts. While there have been numerous recreations of Roman ‘concretes’ in the past, hydrophobic linings have received little attention, and all preliminary studies in these recreations have paid more attention to the dry components and the lime than to the hydric needs of the …
The uses of citizenship in the post-Roman West
It has been a recurrent shortcoming in the historiography of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages to dismiss the importance of citizenship after Caracalla’s edict, but especially after the fall of Rome. This tendency comes from the implicit assumption that citizenship in this period referred either to the vestiges of an outdated Roman citizenship or to a Christian spiritual model of civic belonging that focused first and foremost on a world t…
Lycanthropus adulescens
The adaptation of elements of Greek and Roman myth and folklore is a recurrent aspect of late-twentieth- and early-twenty-first-century fiction on page and screen. These elements are usually presented alongside other mythologies and serve to add depth and veracity to the world-building. This is no different in Teen Wolf, an MTV show that focused on Scott McCall’s journey through lycanthropy. However, in most modern fiction the classical element i…
The water cycle in Reccopolis
Reccopolis was a new city built in Visigothic Spain in the late 6th c. CE. Even rarer than this example of an ex novo urban foundation in the post-Roman West is the fact that the city was equipped with a brand-new aqueduct. The aqueduct has, until now, only been partially studied, but in this paper we update and re-assess the original, preliminary results. We consider the city's whole water cycle, including usage and drainage, employing new engin…
Assessing place‐based identities in the early Middle Ages
Sociological models of place‐based identity can be used to better understand the social dynamics of local communities and how they interact with their surroundings. This paper explores how these theoretical models of belonging to a place, in tandem with communal cognitive maps, can be applied to post‐Roman contexts, taking the Iberian Peninsula in the Visigothic period (sixth–eighth centuries) as a preliminary case study. We argue that this appro…
Remembering and Forgetting the Ancient City
The Greco-Roman world is identified in the modern mind by its cities. This includes both specific places such as Athens and Rome, but also an instantly recognizable style of urbanism wrought in marble and lived in by teeming tunic-clad crowds. Selective and misleading this vision may be, but it speaks to the continuing importance these ancient cities have had in the centuries that followed and the extent to which they define the period in subsequ…
A Late Antique Rural Community in Mérida
This paper presents the contextualized results of the latest excavations at the site of Casa Herrera (Mérida, Spain). Casa Herrera is one of the best examples of a late antique site in the Iberian Peninsula, not only because of the degree of preservation of the remains but also because of its long chronological sequence, which runs from the first to the ninth century. The excavations of the surroundings of the funerary basilica and the Roman aque…
The Visigothic Kingdom
New Directions in the Study of Visigothic Spain
Since the fall of the Visigothic kingdom in 711, analysis of its history has been tied to contemporary Spanish politics. Political and economic developments in Spain since the 1970s have driven research into the late antique and early medieval period. Most notably, archaeological evidence has come to play a much more prominent role in analyses of the Visigothic period in Spain. This article synthesises archaeological and historical research from …
Nunc autem a Gothis subversa
The transition between the sixth and the seventh centuries in the towns of Iberia has been a matter of much discussion, leading to the development of the ‘urban renewal’ model, by which the Visigothic process of state formation generated a new urban munificence. A similar process can be seen in the towns of the B yzantine area, and our aim is to discuss the evolution of the urban settlements of the modern province of Alicante, reassessing the ava…
Central Places in the Post-Roman Mediterranean
Most current discussions on Late Antique and early medieval archaeology are focused on issues such as the use of the landscape, the abandonment of towns, and the reorganisation of rural settlements. The common element in all these cases is that the presence of a central place is key to analysing the social, political, and economic interrelations between sites, areas, and territories. Within the academic literature, however, the notion of a ‘centr…
A Preliminary Study of the Aqueduct of Reccopolis
Reccopolis was a new urban foundation of the late sixth century AD , built by K ing L iuvigild during the period of the V isigothic state formation. The city was equipped, alongside other facilities, with an aqueduct built ex novo in the Roman technique. This has only recently been studied. The construction of a new city and a new aqueduct indicates a great economic effort by the V isigothic ruler: the event was in itself also a grand act of prop…
