Lead isotopes in the context of the provenance of copper alloys and mutability processes in Lithuania from the second half of the 1st century to the 13th century AD
This paper presents the results of analysis of lead isotope ratios (208Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, 206Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/206Pb, 207Pb/206Pb) in copper alloys combined with chemical composition studies of archaeological artefacts by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The study covers a total of 208 samples collected from 55 sites spread all over Lithuania. The chronological range of the study encompasses the period from the second half …
She is from the 21st century
Publisher: Klaipėdos universitetas, Journal: Archaeologia Baltica, Title: She is from the 21st century - in memoriam Rimutė Rimantienė (25.10.1920–4.07.2023), Authors: Audronė Bliujienė, Dalia Butrimaitė-Ostrauskienė, Gytis Grižas
Analysis of cultural heritage reference materials by portable and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence measuring methods
This article discusses the results of a large-scale analysis of five cultural heritage alloy reference materials (CHARM) and their shavings using handheld (pXRF) and stationary energy dispersive (ED-XRF) spectrometers. The primary objective of these studies was to assess the capability of the pXRF and ED-XRF spectrometers as a non-invasive surface-measuring technique used for the analysis of the reference materials and the reliability of the data…

Essential changes in the composition of copper alloys reveal technological diversities in the transition from the Earliest Iron Age to the Early Roman period in Lithuania
In the context of archaeometallurgical studies of copper alloys, it is relevant to record the essential changes in the elemental composition of copper alloys that occur during changes in technology and transitions in human history. This article presents the shift in the elemental composition of copper alloy from bronze-based alloys to brass ones during essential changes in archaeological material which happened at the turn of the Earliest Iron Ag…
Manufacture of the Well-Known Central and Northeastern European Eye Fibulae
The emergence and widespread distribution of eye fibulae as adornment objects, from the northern provinces of the Roman Empire to northeastern Europe and Scandinavia, as well as their typology have been widely explored. Currently in Lithuania, a total of 209 eye fibulae dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries are known. The geographical distribution, typology and chronology of these Early Roman Period jewelry artifacts do not present any problem. How…
Early Roman Iron Age Jewellery in the Northern Barbaricum
The first data on the human diet in Late Roman and Early Migration period western Lithuania
Dietary aspects of the West Lithuanian people during the Late Roman and Early Migration periods with reference to household and funerary pottery
Human-Horse Burials in Lithuania in the Late Second to Seventh Century ad
Contemporary Lithuania, an area of the Balt cultures, is the northernmost region where burials, dated from the late second to the late seventh century ad , have been found with selected parts or whole bodies of horses. This study presents new information about these burials based on a multidisciplinary—archaeological, zooarchaeological, and chronological—approach. Our aim is to reconstruct the funeral rites and the human-horse relationships in Li…
Non-Destructive Methods in Field Archaeology in Lithuania
Since 2010, several archaeological sites in Lithuania have been geomagnetically surveyed, as part of a German-Lithuanian cooperation project. Within the framework of this cooperation, the Ėgliškiai/Anduliai cemetery, the Taurapilis barrow site, Taurapilis and Opstainiai/Vilkyškiai (outer settlements), and Jakai/Sudmantai (the enclosure) have been investigated. In almost all the sites, features and structures were detected that enable us to make s…
Armed People of East and Southeast Lithuania in the Geocultural Context of the Migration Period
The article discusses the rapidly changing geocultural situation from the fifth to the seventh century in east and southeast Lithuania. As chiefdoms with strong leaders were taking shape from the fifth to the seventh centuries, the demonstration of power by means of exceptional weapons and other cultural elements became a highly important factor
Population history and palaeoenvironment in the Skomantai archaeological site, West Lithuania
Skomantai Hill-Fort in Western Lithuania
Hill-forts are visually distinct archaeological monuments of the Lithuanian landscape; despite excavations that have recently become more intensive, more often than not we still make judgments of hill-forts on the basis of their surviving image, which is assumed to reflect the final stage of their existence. Usually our knowledge about the size of the settlement at its foot, its planigraphy, and of course chronology, is too slender to make any co…
Exotic Lands, Quixotic Friends
Little is Currently known about contacts between eastern Lithuania and the Middle Danube region between c 380 and c 620. The evidence that exists has often been interpreted in terms of a migration from the Carpathian Basin into the area of the North European Plains between the Upper Nemunas (Niemen) and the middle course of the Western Dvina. The old interpretation pertaining to the so-called Migration Period in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia need…
