Concepts of healthy and environmentally sustainable diets clash with a life in transition – Findings from a qualitative study in urban Burkina Faso
BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan African countries like Burkina Faso face a dietary transition and are experiencing a shift in disease burden. OBJECTIVE: We explored perceptions of healthy and environmentally sustainable dietary habits in urban Burkina Faso in order to tailor nutritional interventions to the local population and ultimately improve public and planetary health. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory qualitative study with semi-structured face…
Acceptability of cool roofs
Providing communities with technical information regarding how the cool roof functions and can be maintained may support uptake via acceptability. Desirability of the roof may be achieved via a combination of highlighting the indoor cooling of the roof as reported by users, sharing of results with the community so that they have an insight into the effects of the roof, and feedback regarding the products useability and durability
Effects of a cafeteria-based sustainable diet intervention on wellbeing at a large German hospital
This worksite cafeteria-based diet intervention yielded nominal improvements in mental and physical wellbeing among customers; this could be mediated by increased adherence to the PHD. These trends warrant verification in larger-sized intervention studies with more intense intervention dosages. Our findings underline the importance of sustainable food environments for planetary health. The protocol was registered at the German-Clinical-Trial-Regi…
Final year medical students’ expectations for medical education on climate change and planetary health – a qualitative study
This study provides unique insights into FYMS' perceptions of PHE, emphasizing the importance of integrating climate change and health topics into medical curricula and revealing perceived limitations. By aligning educational approaches with students' preferences and especially their concerns, appealing curricula can ultimately foster a more climate-sensitive medical practice
Making climate-sensitive health counselling acceptable for patients
Acceptability of health-only versus climate-and-health framings in lifestyle-related climate-sensitive health counselling
Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg
Climate-sensitive health counselling in Germany
Almost half of the participants in this sample would like to receive CSHC, especially those who are younger, more alarmed about CC and more politically oriented to the left. More research and training on patient-centred implementation of CSHC is needed
‘Climate change mitigation is a hot topic, but not when it comes to hospitals’
OBJECTIVE: Physical and mental well-being are threatened by climate change. Since hospitals in high-income countries contribute significantly to climate change through their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the medical ethics imperative of 'do no harm' imposes a responsibility on hospitals to decarbonise. We investigated hospital stakeholders' perceptions of hospitals' GHG emissions sources and the sense of responsibility for reducing GHG emission…
The Role of Health in Households’ Balancing Act for Lifestyles Compatible with the Paris Agreement—Qualitative Results from Mannheim, Germany
Household lifestyles are the main drivers of climate change. Climate change mitigation measures directed to households often have substantial health co-benefits. The European mixed-methods study HOPE (HOuseholds' Preferences for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in four European high-income countries) investigates households' preferences for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and particularly researches the role of information on health co-benefit…
It starts at home? Climate policies targeting household consumption and behavioral decisions are key to low-carbon futures
Through their consumption behavior, households are responsible for 72% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, they are key actors in reaching the 1.5 °C goal under the Paris Agreement. However, the possible contribution and position of households in climate policies is neither well understood, nor do households receive sufficiently high priority in current climate policy strategies. This paper investigates how behavioral change can achieve a s…
Human health as a motivator for climate change mitigation
Promoting health under the Paris Climate Agreement – results from a European mixed-methods study
General Practitioners’ Perceptions of Heat Health Impacts on the Elderly in the Face of Climate Change—A Qualitative Study in Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Heat health impacts (HHI) on the elderly are a growing concern in the face of climate change and aging populations. General practitioners (GPs) have an important role in health care for the elderly. To inform the development of effective prevention measures, it is important to investigate GPs’ perceptions of HHI. Twenty four qualitative expert interviews were conducted with GPs and analyzed using the framework approach. GPs were generally aware o…
Explaining climate policies’ popularity—An empirical study in four European countries
Household preferences for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in four European high-income countries
This is one of the first comprehensive mixed-methods approaches to investigate which mitigation measures households are most willing to implement in order to reach the 1,5° target set by the Paris Agreement, and whether health co-benefits can serve as a motivator for households to implement these measures. The comparison of the empirical data with current climate policies will provide knowledge for tailoring effective climate change mitigation an…
