  • Middle Neolithic agricultural and land-use models in southern Poland

    Open Access•Marta Korczyńska-Cappenberg, Marta Korczyñska et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 18

Palaeoecological and archaeological studies conducted in Mozgawa (southern Poland) demonstrated a long-term sustainable land-use by inhabitants of a large settlement occupied during the second half of the fourth millennium BC. The Middle Neolithic society established a settlement that covered an area of about 30–35 ha and functioned during at least three centuries, as validated by the absolute chronology. A thorough analysis based on the fuzzy-lo…

  • Was Gordineşti II-Stînca Goala abandoned due to cultural changes or environmental impacts? A case of the late Trypillia settlement in northern Moldova

    Open Access•Małgorzata Rybicka, Agnieszka Wacnik et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 33

This study aims to provide information on cultural and environmental factors influencing the development and decline of the Late Trypillia settlement at Gordineşti II–Stînca goală. The discussion is based on the results of archaeological excavations, non-invasive surveys (magnetometric and GPR), as well as radiocarbon, macroremains, palynological, archaeozoological, and isotopic analyses. All data suggests that Gordineşti II–Stînca goală consiste…

  • Synthesis of palaeoecological data from the Polish Lowlands suggests heterogeneous patterns of old-growth forest loss after the Migration Period

Open Access•Sambor Czerwiński, Katarzyna Marcisz et al.•ARTICLE•Scientific Reports•2022

Human impact on Central European forests dates back thousands of years. In this study we reanalyzed 36 published pollen data sets with robust chronologies from Polish Lowlands to determine the patterns of large-scale forest decline after the Migration Period (fourth to sixth century CE). The study revealed substantial heterogeneity in the old-growth forest decline patterns. Using new high-resolution studies, we could better understand the timing …

  • First representative xylological data on the exploitation of wood by early medieval woodcrafters in the Polesia region, southwestern Belarus

  • Forests and foragers

    Open Access•Agnieszka Wacnik, Witold Gumiński et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2020•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 11

Newly acquired palaeobotanical data, including pollen, charred and uncharred wood, provided an exhaustive overview of the temporal changes in woodlands, which changes are due to the cumulative effect of natural processes and the long-term impact of pre-agrarian societies. We used the unique advantage of the peat bog archaeological site at Szczepanki located on an island in the former Lake Staświn (Masurian Lake District) to get an overview of woo…

  • Resilience, rapid transitions and regime shifts

    Open Access•Iván Hernández‐almeida, Iván Hernández-Almeida et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Referencias: 11

Rapid ecosystem transitions and adverse effects on ecosystem services as responses to combined climate and human impacts are of major concern. Yet few long-term (i.e. >60 years) quantitative observational time series exist, particularly for ecosystems that have a long history of human intervention. Here, we combine three major environmental pressures (land use, nutrients and erosion) with quantitative summer and winter climate reconstructions and…

  • The environmental and cultural contexts of the late Iron Age and medieval settlement in the Mazurian Lake District, NE Poland

    Open Access•Agnieszka Wacnik, Mirosława Kupryjanowicz et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2014•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 9

Pollen analysis of sediments from three lakes and analysis of plant macroremains including charcoal from archaeological sites in the Mazurian Lake District provide new data for the reconstruction of vegetation changes related to human activity between the 1st and 13th century AD. At that time settlements of the Bogaczewo culture (from the turn of the 1st century AD to the first part of the 5th century AD), the Olsztyn Group (second part of the 5t…
