Navigating System Leadership in Intentionally Decentralized Systems of Schools
Purpose: Pursuing a decentralized approach to system organization is increasingly popular. For example, several large districts in the U.S. have implemented portfolio-managed approaches to system organization designed to enhance school leaders’ authority by enhancing system leaders’ oversight responsibilities. But there is an open question about how organizational conditions in decentralized systems shape the ways system leadership roles do or do…
Can Decentralized School Systems Pursue Common Ends? An Analysis of Urban Catholic School and System Leaders’ Perceptions of Reform
There has been little research examining how decentralized Catholic diocesan systems have worked toward their stated system-wide goal of keeping urban Catholic schools sustainable. Through a new qualitative analysis of interviews with Catholic school and system leaders, we demonstrate in this article how leaders agreed about the issues preventing urban Catholic elementary schools from becoming operationally sustainable but disagreed about potenti…
Restorative Justice in a No Excuses Charter School

Making Catholic Schools Research Relevant
Despite the outsized influence the Catholic school sector in the United States has on policymaking, research into the organization of Catholic schools has not kept pace with contemporary educational research trends. In this brief paper, we diagnose how conceptual and empirical decisions made within the field of Catholic education resulted in the field’s relative isolation from other research communities and highlight additional explanations for t…
Examining the Legacy of Urban Catholic Schooling in the U.S
Training, Technique, and Automaticity
A controversial innovation within the field of teacher education is the relocation of teacher preparation to new graduate schools of education (nGSEs). nGSEs are state-authorized institutions of higher education that prepares teachers, endorse candidates for teacher licensure, and grant master’s degrees, yet are not university-based. This paper offers a profile of the Charles Sposato Graduate School of Education, an nGSE which emerged from the ed…
Cognitive and Emotional Processing in Narratives of Women Abused by Intimate Partners
This study examined relationships between cognitive and emotional processing with changes in pain and depression among intimate partner violence survivors. Twenty-five women who wrote about their most traumatic experiences completed measures of pain and depressive symptoms before the first writing session and again 4 months following the last writing session. Reduced pain was significantly associated with less use of positive and negative emotion…
