  • Early and Middle Holocene Human Occupation of the Egyptian Eastern Desert

    Open Access•Pierre M Vermeersch, Pierre Vermeersch et al.•ARTICLE•African Archaeological Review•2015•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 4

In this paper, we discuss human occupation during the Early and Middle Holocene in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, based mainly on the data provided by excavated deposits from the Sodmein Cave, which produced an important Holocene stratigraphic sequence. This sequence is dated by a large number of conventional and AMS 14C dates. It appears that the area was empty of human occupation during the Late Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the earliest Holocene. Wi…

  • Holocene environment and subsistence patterns near the Tree Shelter, Red Sea Mountains, Egypt

Open Access•Elena Marinova, Veerle Linseele et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

The Tree Shelter site dates to the Early to Mid-Holocene (8000 to 4900 14 C yr BP). Present conditions around the site are hyperarid, but charcoal remains indicate less severe aridity at the time of its occupation. The environment around the site then supported a rich wadi vegetation, which allowed hunting during the Epipaleolithic and herding during the Neolithic occupation. Although more favorable than today, the environmental conditions also d…

  • A Survey of the Bili Cave and Its Surroundings in the Red Sea Mountains, El Gouna, Egypt

Pierre Vermeersch, Veerle Rots et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2005•Citada por: 1

A survey in the El Gouna area, Red Sea, Egypt, disclosed the presence of Acheulean, early Middle Palaeolithic, late Middle Palaeolithic and Middle Holocene sites. One of the Middle Holocene sites is a “Steinplatz”” with Predynastic lithic material

  • The Middle Holocene Shell Mound of El Gouna on the Red Sea (Egypt)

Pierre M Vermeersch, Pierre Vermeersch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2005•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

In the El Gouna (Hurghada) area on the Red Sea of Egypt, a Middle Holocene shell mound from around 5800 b.p. (uncalibrated radiocarbon years before A.D. 1950) has been tested by a restricted excavation. Collection of shellfish on the Red Sea shore provided subsistence opportunities for Middle Holocene groups coeval with the Early Predynastic Tasian of the Nile Valley. The El Gouna site demonstrates for the first time that shell mounds exist near …

Discussion about a possible African origin of modern humans is hampered by the lack of Late Pleistocene skeletal material from the Nile valley, the likely passage-way from East Africa to Asia and Europe. Here we report the discovery of a burial of an anatomically modern child from southern Egypt. Its clear relation with Middle Palaeolithic chert extraction activities and a series of OSL dates, from correlative aeolian sands, suggests an age betwe…
