Characteristics of digital twins to visualize, monitor and predict outcomes on participation in meaningful activities
Results identified four aspects of a participation in meaningful activities to be represented in digital twins. Those align with, and extend, existing literature on participation and recovery experiences. For the visualization of those aspects in digital twins, participants emphasized the importance of integrating both immediate feedback and longitudinal tracking of participation experiences
Maintenance of service delivery during medical countermeasures deployment
COVID-19 vaccines significantly reduced COVID-19 related morbidity and mortality. Although purposeful response measures like movement restrictions affected delivery of other health services, few studies have investigated the association between COVID-19 vaccination as a response strategy and continuity of other immunization services. We aimed to assess the association between the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and continuity of routine immunization ser…
Patterns of healthcare contacts for decreased fetal movements in Sweden before and during the Covid-19 pandemic
The Covid-19 pandemic has posed challenges to maternal healthcare systems worldwide, impacting women’s access to and utilisation of reproductive healthcare services, particularly highlighting health inequities among minority populations. Maternal awareness of fetal movements is a measure to evaluate fetal well-being. In Sweden, women are encouraged to contact healthcare if they experience decreased fetal movements. It is unknown whether women in …

Challenges of maternity continuum of care within the primary health care in northwest Ethiopia
Background: The maternity continuum of care plays a vital role in improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. However, its uptake remains low in Ethiopia, highlighting the need to identify challenges within the primary health care system to inform practice. Hence, this study aimed to explore the challenges of the maternity continuum of care within the primary health care system in northwest Ethiopia. Methods: An interpretive description approach wa…
Development and validation of a prognosis risk score model for neonatal mortality in the Amhara region, Ethiopia. A prospective cohort study
BACKGROUND: A neonatal mortality prediction score can assist clinicians in making timely clinical decisions to save neonates' lives by facilitating earlier admissions where needed. It can also help reduce unnecessary admissions. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to develop and validate a prognosis risk score for neonatal mortality within 28 days in public hospitals in the Amhara region, Ethiopia. METHODS: The model was developed using a validated neonat…
How interventions to maintain services during the Covid-19 pandemic strengthened systems for delivery of maternal and child health services
BACKGROUND: Health systems are resilient if they absorb, adapt, and transform in response to shocks. Although absorptive and adaptive capacities have been demonstrated during the COVID-19 response, little has been documented about their transformability and strengthened service delivery systems. We aimed to describe improvements in maternal and child health service delivery as a result of investments during the COVID-19 response. METHODS: This wa…
Obstetric outcomes and uptake of care among 149 non-Swedish speaking migrant women attending a birth preparation visit during pregnancy – An observational study from Sweden
INFOR may increase uptake of some important aspects of care during pregnancy, birth and postpartum among migrants of diverse backgrounds. The findings raise concerns however about communication support for migrant women, especially during labour and birth. The offer of professional interpreting as part of standard maternity care for women who need it is essential and must be improved in order to provide equitable care for all
Putting co-creation into practice
Background Integrating evidence-based midwifery practices improves healthcare quality for women and newborns, but an evidence-to-practice gap exists. Co-created quality improvement initiatives led by midwives could bridge this gap, prevent resource waste and ensure intervention relevance. However, how to co-create a midwife-led quality improvement intervention has not been scientifically explored. Objective The objective of this study is to descri…
Older adults as designers of behavior change strategies to increase physical activity—Report of a participatory design process
Background: Despite the significant value of physical activity for the health of older adults, this population often fails to achieve recommended activity levels. Digital interventions show promise in providing support for self-managed physical activity. However, more information is needed about older adults' preferences for digital support to change physical activity behaviors as well as the process of designing them. The aim of this paper was t…
Valid and reliable neonatal near-miss assessment scale in Ethiopia
BACKGROUND: The concept of a neonatal near miss is used to explain neonates who nearly died but survived a life-threatening complication in the first 28 days of life. We have left many ill surviving (near-miss) neonates, due to a lack of valid and reliable assessment scale, particularly in Ethiopia. AIM: We aim to psychometrically validate the neonatal near-miss assessment scale (NNMAS) for Ethiopia. METHODS: A total of 465 live birth neonates we…
The midwife’s role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals
'The midwife's role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals: Protect and Invest Together' is a report providing the reader the opportunity for understanding and appreciating the history of midwifery in Sweden and the interlinked nature of the United Nation's SDGs supporting health and wellbeing of women and children. Effect of Flexible Sacrum Position on Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes in Public Health Facilities, Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia
Restricting women giving birth in health care facilities from choosing the most comfortable position during labor and birth is a global problem. This study was aimed to examine the effect of flexible sacrum birth positions on maternal and neonatal outcomes in public health facilities in Ethiopia's Amhara Region. A non-equivalent control group post-test-only design was employed at public health facilities from August to November 2019. A total of 1…
Sustainable Behavior Change for Health Supported by Person-Tailored, Adaptive, Risk-Aware Digital Coaching in a Social Context
Introduction: The Västerbotten Intervention Programme (VIP) in the Region Västerbotten Sweden is one of the very few cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention programmes globally that is integrated into routine primary health care. The VIP has been shown as a cost-effective intervention to significantly reduce CVD mortality. However, little is known about the effectiveness of a digital solution to tailor risk communication strategies for supporting…
Assessment of content validity for a Neonatal Near miss Scale in the context of Ethiopia
BACKGROUND: The concept of neonatal near miss is used to identify neonates who nearly died but survived a life-threatening complication in the first 28 days of life. Neonatal mortality is the tip of the iceberg. Quality improvement through utilization of a validated scale and reduction in adverse neonatal outcome is a priority for achieving sustainable development goals. OBJECTIVES: To develop and assess the content validity of neonatal near-miss…
Half-time evaluation of a new 4-year Ph.D. program in nursing and midwifery at the University of Gondar, Ethiopia
A new four-year Ph.D. programme in nursing and midwifery, the first of its kind in Ethiopia, was started in 2018/2019 at the University of Gondar when eight doctoral students in nursing and midwifery entered the program. We who have been involved see this as an appropriate time to evaluate what has been accomplished to date and to look toward future possibilities. Our aim in carrying out such an evaluation and presenting our findings is in part t…
Pregnancy outcomes among women born in Somalia and Sweden giving birth in the Stockholm area – a population-based study
BACKGROUND: Studies report that women born in some African countries, after migrating to the Nordic countries, have worse pregnancy outcomes than women born in the receiving countries. With the aim of identifying unmet needs among Somali-born women, we here study this subgroup. OBJECTIVE: We compared pregnancy outcomes among women born in Somalia to women born in Sweden. Further, we investigated whether the proactive maternal observation of fetal…
African midwifery students’ self-assessed confidence in antenatal care

Confidence in antenatal midwifery skills is important and could differ depending on the provision of education among the training institutions across Africa. Objective: The aim of the study was to describe and compare midwifery students’ confidence in basic antenatal skills, in relation to a…
Differences in help‐seeking behaviours and perceived helpfulness of services between abused and non‐abused women
New mothers may face substantial physical and mental health challenges during the postpartum period and are at a greater risk of intimate partner violence. Healthcare services provide support, however, acknowledging a problem and seeking help for it can be difficult. Research on where postpartum women seek help and how helpful they perceive it is limited. Additionally, little is known of how these help-seeking behaviours differ between abused and…
You Don't Leave Your Baby—Mother's Experiences after a Stillbirth
