  • Researcher street race-gender in qualitative field work

    Open Access•Karina Santellano, P Zabala Ortiz•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2026

The assumption of shared racial and gendered identities with respondents can lead researchers to overlook many of the internal hierarchies that exist within those shared identities, and to reproduce the power dynamics embedded within those hierarchies throughout the research process. In this article, we propose researcher street-race gender as a reflexive framework for researchers to better interrogate how perceived race and gender shape their re…

  • Migration

    Open Access•Mary M Kritz, P Zabala Ortiz•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2025•Referencias: 3

International migration is the cross‐border movement of people from their country of origin to another country of residence. People may be pulled to new locations by labor and educational opportunities, and pushed out of their countries by conflict, natural disasters, or changing laws, or experience some combination of both. Migrants can be distinguished by the nature of their departure or arrival, the amount of time they spend outside their coun…

  • We're Expected to Be Homogenous

    Open Access•P Zabala Ortiz•ARTICLE•Sociology of Race and Ethnicity•2025•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 37

The construction of Latines as a racially homogenous group in the U.S. obscures the various contestations and negotiations that differently racialized Latines undergo as a result of the racial dynamics in place within Latinidad. Drawing on in-depth interviews with Latine students at Overton University, I show the kinds of ethnoracial contestations that occur among Latines as they negotiate what it means to take on that panethnic identity. I find …

  • The social aftershocks of a migration crisis

    P Zabala Ortiz•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2023

In this paper, I explore how the racial structure of an immigrant-receiving Latin American society informs the strategies that are available to its members when they are confronted with the arrival of perceived racial outsiders. Using survey data, I explore how Dominicans responded to the rapid influx of displaced Haitians in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and find that when surveyed after the earthquake, Dominicans were more like…

  • Connectivity, contestation, and cultural production

    P Zabala Ortiz•ARTICLE•Identities•2022

In this paper, I employ thematic analysis of text data from a web forum to highlight the prevalent debates and themes that emerge in online discussions of Dominican identity. I find that these spaces can be arenas for identity contestation where what I refer to as traditionalist understandings of race and culture clash with non-traditionalist perspectives. When this happens, users rely on a number of strategies to rouse cultural memory, evoke rac…
