  • ACTN3 genotypes of Rugby Union players

Open Access•W Bell, James Colley et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2011

Relationships between ACTN3 genotypes and power or body composition-related phenotypes were not significant. As fat increased, power-related phenotypes decreased. As body composition increased, power-related phenotypes increased

  • Perception of effort at low and moderate intensity exercise in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia

Open Access•W Bell, J Warner et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2006

It was concluded that perception of effort in survivors of ALL at low and moderate intensity exercise was the same as that of control subjects. Correlations between perceived effort and physiological variables at moderate exercise were low to high, while those between perceived effort and time from treatment were generally weak

  • Somatic characteristics and cardiovascular risk factors in growth hormone deficiency

    Open Access•W Bell, J S Davies et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2004

The purpose of the present study was to identify the effect of treatment with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) on seven somatic characteristics and eight clinical cardiovascular risk factors. Twenty‐seven male and 24 female patients between the ages of 21 and 60 years were examined. The investigation was a double‐blind, placebo‐controlled study of 12 months duration. Patients were assigned randomly to treatment (T) and placebo (P) groups. …

  • Strength and its relationship to changes in fat-free mass, total body potassium, total body water and IGF-1 in adults with growth hormone deficiency

    Open Access•W Bell, J S Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1999

The present investigation examined changes in strength in growth hormone deficient (GHD) adults following treatment with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH), and assessed their relationship to changes in fat-free mass (FFM), total body potassium (TBK), total body water (TBW), the concentration of TBK and TBW per kg FFM, and insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). The investigation was double-blind and placebo-controlled for a period of 6 months…

  • Fat-free mass and fat mass in active boys during adolescence

    Open Access•W Bell•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1997

Longitudinal body composition data were examined in 24 active and 10 control boys between the ages of 12.3 and 15.3 years. The main objectives were (1) to contrast the distance and velocity curves of fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) in active and control groups using chronological and maturity bases, and (2) to compare the timing and magnitude of peak velocities in FFM and FM in relation to those of body mass. FFM was greater in active than …
