  • Southern African Climate Change

Open Access•Callum Munday, Richard Washington et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2025•Referencias: 1

Southern Africa, along with the Mediterranean and eastern South America, is one of three major land regions projected to dry in the future. Confidence in the drying trend relies on a clear understanding of the regional climate and evaluation of the climate models used for projections. This paper reviews our understanding of southern African climate and evaluates the performance of successive climate model generations. A key finding is improved co…

  • Climate variability affects water-energy-food infrastructure performance in East Africa

Open Access•Christian Siderius, Seshagiri Rao Kolusu et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2021

The need to assess major infrastructure performance under a changing climate is widely recognized yet rarely practiced, particularly in rapidly growing African economies. Here, we consider high-stakes investments across the water, energy, and food sectors for two major river basins in a climate transition zone in Africa. We integrate detailed interpretation of observed and modeled climate-system behavior with hydrological modeling and decision-re…

  • Characterizing half‐a‐degree difference

Open Access•Rachel James, Richard Washington et al.•ARTICLE•Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews…•2017

The Paris Agreement long‐term global temperature goal refers to two global warming levels: well below 2°C and 1.5°C above preindustrial. Regional climate signals at specific global warming levels, and especially the differences between 1.5°C and 2°C, are not well constrained, however. In particular, methodological challenges related to the assessment of such differences have received limited attention. This article reviews alternative approaches …

  • What determines perceived value of seasonal climate forecasts? A theoretical analysis

  • The Bodélé depression

Open Access•Ilan Koren, Yoram J Kaufman et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2006

About 40 million tons of dust are transported annually from the Sahara to the Amazon basin. Saharan dust has been proposed to be the main mineral source that fertilizes the Amazon basin, generating a dependence of the health and productivity of the rain forest on dust supply from the Sahara. Here we show that about half of the annual dust supply to the Amazon basin is emitted from a single source: the Bodélé depression located northeast of Lake C…

  • Dust-Storm Source Areas Determined by the Total Ozone Monitoring Spectrometer and Surface Observations

Richard Washington, Martin Todd et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2003•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 76

Dust storms are recognized as having a very wide range of environmental impacts. Their geomorphological interest lies in the amount of deflation and wind erosion they indicate and their role in loess formation. Atmospheric mineral-dust loading is one of the largest uncertainties in global climate-change modeling and is known to have an important impact on the radiation budget and atmospheric instability. Major gaps remain in our understanding of …
