Characterization and Selection of Mortar Samples for Radiocarbon Dating in the Framework of the Modis2 Intercomparison
For several decades, many efforts have been dedicated to enhancing the accuracy of mortar radiocarbon dating and evaluating the reliability of the results concerning the typology of the examined specimens. Several assumptions that are fundamental for the application of the method may be in many cases not fulfilled, such as (a) complete primary limestone dissociation during calcination, (b) efficient separation of geogenic carbon contained in calc…

The Beginning of the Iron Age at Arslantepe
The Iron Age chronology at Arslantepe is the result of the interpretation of Luwian hieroglyphic inscriptions and archaeological data coming from the site and its surrounding region. A new round of investigations of the Iron Age levels has been conducted at the site over the last 10 years. Preliminary results allowed the combination of the archaeological sequence with the historical events that extended from the collapse of the Late Bronze Age em…
Can the 14 C Production in 1055 Ce Be Affected by Sn1054
Annually resolved radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements on tree rings led to the discovery of abrupt variations in 14 C production attributed to large solar flares. We present new results of annual and subannual 14 C fluctuations in tree rings from a middle-latitude sequoia (California) and a high-latitude pine (Finland), analyzed for the period 1030–1080 CE, to trace a possible impact of the Crab supernova explosion, occurring during the Oort minimum…

Middle- to late-Holocene relative sea-level changes at Puerto Deseado (Patagonia, Argentina)
Stratigraphic, morphologic and radiocarbon data from Puerto Deseado coastal area (Santa Cruz Province, Argentina) indicate that the Holocene coastline formed in response to the discontinuous aggradation of coarse gravely beaches since c. 6300 cal. yr BP related to a progressive falling of relative sea level. Beach ridge crests crudely approximate to the sea level showing at least three steps of aggradation and relative sea-level lowering. Two ina…

Biomass Growth Rate of Trees from Cameroon Based on 14 C Analysis and Growth Models
The question of whether the rise in CO 2 levels observed during the industrial era has influenced the rates of tree biomass growth represents one of the main unsolved questions in the field of climate change science. In this framework, the African tropical forest represents one of the most important carbon (C) sinks, but detailed knowledge of its response to elevated CO 2 is still lacking, especially regarding tree growth rate estimations. A majo…

Characterization of Different Chemical Procedures for 14 C Dating of Buried, Cremated, and Modern Bone Samples at Circe
Bone chemical treatment for radiocarbon dating has drawn the attention of different laboratories because dates of bones and charcoals found in the same layer often disagree. Excluding diet-related reservoir effects, this observation is likely due to a nonoptimized procedure of contaminant removal from the extracted collagen. In this study, systematic work on the bone chemical treatment was performed with the aim to investigate the effect of each …
