Metropolitan Regions and Public Consortia
This article examines the importance of metropolitan regions and public consortia within the context of cooperative federalism in Brazil. The main objective is to analyze how intergovernmental partnerships can address the challenges of urban management. The study focuses on the transition from an authoritarian to a democratic model and how this has impacted metropolitan policy, as well as exploring public consortia as mechanisms for the shared ma…
Measuring the territorial effort in research, development, and innovation from a multiple criteria approach
Research, development and innovation are fundamental for the socioeconomic growth of the territories. Consequently, many governments set spending targets for research and development (R&D), for example the EU has a goal of reaching a spending target of 3% of the Union's GDP. However, recent literature emphasizes that spending on R&D may not be the most appropriate indicator to measure the innovative efforts of a particular territory. Multidimensi…
Ranking residential locations based on neighborhood sustainability and family profile
Neighborhood characteristics increase human well-being and happiness and is becoming a key criterion for residential location decisions nowadays. This paper proposes a tool to measure neighborhood characteristics, especially those that increase its sustainability, and to rank neighborhoods based on different residents’ profiles. The proposed ranking procedure, based on multiple decision criteria, combines the Technique for Order Preference by Sim…
The grass is greener on the other side”
Despite seven decades of development of the European Union project, on 23 June 2016, the United Kingdom, Europe and the rest of the world were surprised when the Leave campaign won the Brexit referendum, offering an extraordinary case study for researchers. We spatially disaggregate the vote share data, which allows us to explore where anti-European sentiment took root in the UK and why. In this paper, a spatial dependence model is applied to cla…

Spatial Disaggregation of Social Indicators
In this paper we propose a methodology to obtain social indicators at a detailed spatial scale by combining the information contained in census and sample surveys. Similarly to previous proposals, the method proposed here estimates a model at the sample level to later project it to the census scale. The main novelties of the technique presented are that (i) the small-scale mapping produced is perfectly consistent with the aggregates -regional or …
Determinants of immigrants' concentration at local level in Spain
In the 2000s, and with natural population growth rates close to zero, Spain experienced an inflow of almost 5 million immigrants. These new Spanish residents did not tend to locate evenly across the territory and contributed to putting pressure on the already large spatial population imbalances between cities and rural areas, between the coast and the interior and between the central and peripheral areas. Covering the whole Spanish territory and …
Ageing Places in an Ageing Country
Spain is an ageing country, and the present demographic burden is not homogeneously distributed across space. Will the aged population be evenly distributed in the future, or will disparities broaden over time? Identifying the spatial patterns of the aged population concentration and the existence of a demographic burden convergence/divergence process is a pertinent question in Spain after the regional devolution the country has undergone in the …
Higher cost of living in urban areas? An Aids-based analysis of food in Spain
Higher cost of living in urban areas? An AIDS-based analysis of food in Spain. Regional Studies. This article measures the urban–rural gap in the consumption costs for Spain in 2013, basing the comparisons on the estimation of an almost ideal demand system (AIDS) of food from data on the household budget survey. Besides an unconditional comparison, it models the costs of food consumption controlling for household and location characteristics. Qua…

Observing Regularities in Location Patterns
The location of economic activity in Spain is analysed, employing a methodology previously applied to Canada. We ask whether the regularities posited for Canada also hold for Spain, despite the differences in geography. Using census data for the years 1991 and 2001, Spain's 8,086 municipalities are classified according to population size and distance thresholds analogous to those applied to Canada. The location patterns of industries are plotted i…
