  • Insights From the Disabled Advanced Medical Assistance Project

Open Access•Nicola Panocchia, Eluisa Lo Presti et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2025

The DAMA model represents a notable step toward a more inclusive and equitable health care system for persons with disabilities. Its effectiveness is demonstrated by the decrease in emergency visits and increased patient and caregiver satisfaction. To ensure broader implementation, national and international standards must be established, specialized training for health care professionals should be promoted, and DAMA should be integrated into hea…

  • Archaeology and ethnography demonstrate a human origin for Amazonian Dark Earths

Morgan Schmidt, Manuel Arroyo-Kalin et al.•OTHER•2021

Archaeological research provides clear evidence that the widespread formation of Amazonian Dark Earths (ADEs) in tropical lowland South America was concentrated in the Late Holocene, an outcome of sharp demographic growth that peaked towards 1000 BP. In their recent paper, however, Silva et al. propose that the high fertility of ADE is not of anthropic origin but instead the result of alluvial deposition starting in the Middle Holocene (8200-4200…

  • Facing Change through Diversity

Open Access•Laura Pereira Furquim, Jennifer Watling et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2021•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 51

Recent advances in the archaeology of lowland South America are furthering our understanding of the Holocene development of plant cultivation and domestication, cultural niche construction, and relationships between environmental changes and cultural strategies of food production. This article offers new data on plant and landscape management and mobility in Southwestern Amazonia during a period of environmental change at the Middle to Late Holoc…

  • Patterned Villagescapes and Road Networks in Ancient Southwestern Amazonia

    Open Access•Sanna Saunaluoma, Justin Moat et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2021•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 38

Our recent data, collected using remotely sensed imagery and unmanned aerial vehicle surveys, reveal the extremely well-defined patterning of archaeological plaza villages in the Brazilian Acre state in terms of size, layout, chronology, and material culture. The villages comprise various earthen mounds arranged around central plazas and roads that radiate outward from, or converge on, the sites. The roads connected the villages situated 2-10 km …

  • What do Amazonian Shellmounds Tell Us About the Long-Term Indigenous History of South America?

Open Access•Francisco Pugliese, Francisco Antonio Pugliese et al.•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology•2020

  • Archaeological history of Middle Holocene environmental change from fish proxies at the Monte Castelo archaeological shell mound, Southwestern Amazonia

    Open Access•Gabriela Prestes Carneiro, P Béarez et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 39

Monte Castelo, an archeological shell mound located on the southwestern periphery of the Amazon basin, is an artificial forest island occupied from the Middle to late-Holocene, and it contains one of the longest, continuous sequences of human occupation anywhere in the basin. Analysis of fish remains investigates fluctuations in the fish communities that are markers of changes in the paleoenvironment. The 8112 taxonomically identified remains doc…
