CMIP6 models agree on similar carbon cycle feedbacks between enhancing terrestrial and marine carbon sinks
Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is a crucial component of climate mitigation required to reach international climate targets. However, gaps exist in our understanding of the responses and feedbacks of the Earth system to the deployment of CDR. In this study, we compare two complementary approaches that enhance the terrestrial and marine carbon sinks with afforestation and reforestation (A/R) and ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), respectively, unde…
Projecting future forest microclimate using a land surface model
The forest understory experiences temperature variations that are dampened compared to adjacent open areas, allowing the development of a forest microclimate and associated ecological conditions. It is however unclear to what extent forests will maintain this buffering effect under increasing global warming. Providing reliable projections of future forest microclimates is therefore crucial to anticipate climate change impacts on forest biodiversi…
Uncertainty in land carbon budget simulated by terrestrial biosphere models
Global estimates of the land carbon sink are often based on simulations by terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs). The use of a large number of models that differ in their underlying hypotheses, structure and parameters is one way to assess the uncertainty in the historical land carbon sink. Here we show that the atmospheric forcing datasets used to drive these TBMs represent a significant source of uncertainty that is currently not systematically a…
Triose phosphate limitation in photosynthesis models reduces leaf photosynthesis and global terrestrial carbon storage
Triose phosphate utilization (TPU)-limited photosynthesis occurs when carbon export from the Calvin-Benson cycle cannot keep pace with carbon inputs and processing. This condition is poorly constrained by observations but may become an increasingly important driver of global carbon cycling under future climate scenarios. However, the consequences of including or omitting TPU limitation in models have seldom been quantified. Here, we assess the im…
Exploring the likelihood and mechanism of a climate-change-induced dieback of the Amazon rainforest
We examine the evidence for the possibility that 21st-century climate change may cause a large-scale “dieback” or degradation of Amazonian rainforest. We employ a new framework for evaluating the rainfall regime of tropical forests and from this deduce precipitation-based boundaries for current forest viability. We then examine climate simulations by 19 global climate models (GCMs) in this context and find that most tend to underestimate current …
Communication Research and the Task–Oriented Grosup
Central to the problem of theory development in group communication is the inconsistent frame of reference evident in small group research which often overlooks the overt study of communicative behavior. Process–oriented definitions of two key terms—“group” and “task”—provide a theoretical perspective which considers communication central to group research. “Group” is defined as a system of interstructured behaviors—interacts and double interacts…

The Relation Between the Number of Species and the Number of Individuals in a Random Sample of an Animal Population

The Use of Multiple Measurements in Taxonomic Problems
The articles published by the Annals of Eugenics (1925–1954) have been made available online as an historical archive intended for scholarly use. The work of eugenicists was often pervaded by prejudice against racial, ethnic and disabled groups. The online publication of this material for scholarly research purposes is not an endorsement of those views nor a promotion of eugenics in any way.

Indeterminism and Natural Selection
The historical origin and the experimental basis of the concept of physical determinism indicate that this basis was removed with the acceptance of the kinetic theory of matter, while its difficulties are increased by the admission that human nature, in its entirety, is a product of natural causation. An indeterministic view of causation has the advantages (a) of unifying the concept of natural law in different spheres of human experience and (b)…

Statistical Tests of Agreement between Observation and Hypothesis
On the Interpretation of χ 2 from Contingency Tables, and the Calculation of P
XV.—The Correlation between Relatives on the Supposition of Mendelian Inheritance.
Several attempts have already been made to interpret the well-established results of biometry in accordance with the Mendelian scheme of inheritance. It is here attempted to ascertain the biometrical properties of a population of a more general type than has hitherto been examined, inheritance in which follows this scheme. It is hoped that in this way it will be possible to make a more exact analysis of the causes of human variability. The great …
