Open Science and Feminist Ethics
Open science advocates argue that making data sets, studies, methodologies, and other aspects of research free from publication fees and available to scholars will increase collaborations, access, and dissemination of knowledge. In this article, I argue that open access policies and practices raise both feminist and ethical issues. I reflect on the five themes of feminist ethics identified 20 years ago by a task force of the Society for the Psych…

Assessing the Assessments of Teacher Preparation
Teacher preparation programs have both a desire and a responsibility to demonstrate, with affirmative evidence, that teacher education makes a difference in PreK–12 student learning. Program faculty need good data to make decisions about the progress of students, whom to recommend for state licensure, and how to improve teacher education. This article describes an American Psychological Association task force report that discusses 3 measures of p…

The Boston College-Allston/Brighton Partnership
Over the last decade, universities have increasingly begun to recognize their responsibility to address the issues and problems confronting society. Many universities are responding to this challenge by developing formal partnerships with communities. This article describes a specific partnership between Boston College and its local contiguous community. It outlines the development of the partnership from a simple school-university engagement bet…
Between Scylla and Charybdis
I have been reading the Odyssey, the great story of a journey home, and thinking about teacher education as being on a very rough journey. Those who claim the privilege of educating teachers are currently encountering trials that share similarities with those of Odysseus. The Charybdis of privatization of education threatens to drain resources from public schools; the Scylla of high-stakes testing looms over certification gates. Sirens of cynicis…
Longitudinal Pathways Linking Adolescent Reports of Maternal and Paternal Attachments to Psychological Well-Being
Examined in this study were the relations between adolescent ratings of parental attachment (affective quality of parental relationship and parental fostering of autonomy)and self-reported psychological well-being over the 1-year period from the eighth to the ninth grade. Through structural equation modeling, relations between adolescent perceptions of parental attachments and psychological well-being (positive view of self and low levels of depr…
Interprofessional Collaboration for Children and Families
As societal forces affect the well-being of children, youth, and families, professionals are changing the ways they practice and the settings in which they work In this article, the authors point toward interprofessional collaborations and integrated service systems as promising reform efforts that present opportunities and challenges for counseling psychologists. The authors describe the history and commitments of counseling psychology that posi…
Human Rights and Mental Health Among Latin American Women in Situations of State-Sponsored Violence
A Task Force of the American Psychological Association Division 35, Psychology of Women, has been collecting resources that address issues of human rights and mental health among Latin American women living in situations of war and/or state-sponsored violence. This work is being conducted primarily by women's groups, progressive organizations, and individual women in these contexts of institutionalized political violence. This paper describes our…
Contributions of Parental Attachments to View of Self and Depressive Symptoms among Early Adolescents
Three causal models, examining the relationship of parental attachment to view of self and level of depressive symptoms, were examined for a sample of eighth-grade girls (n = 92) and boys (n = 115). Consistent with the Bowlby construct of the internal working model of self structural equation modeling provided tentative support for the mediating role of view of self in influencing depressive symptoms. Gender differences were found for levels of d…
