Understanding social media–based pedagogy and pre-service teachers’ inclusive education intentions through a complementary multi-method analysis using artificial neural network, MGA, and fsQCA
Social media (SM) offers an emerging pedagogical setting for advancing inclusive education. This study explored the associations among attitude (AT), perceived behavioral control (PBC), subjective norms (SN), and pre-service teachers’ (PSTs) intentions (IN) toward inclusive education within a social media–supported training context. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior, data from 212 PSTs were analyzed using a complementary multi-method ana…
Extracting Course Features and Learner Profiling for Course Recommendation Systems
As education has evolved towards online learning, the availability of learning materials has expanded and consequently, learners’ behavior in choosing resources has changed. The need to offer personalized learning experiences and content has never been greater. Research has explored methods to personalize learning paths and match learning materials with learners’ profiles. Course recommendation systems have emerged as a solution to help learners …
A K-6 computational thinking curricular framework
In this paper we propose a universal curricular framework that is intended to aid K-6 schoolteachers holistically and humanistically developing their students' computational thinking (CT) skills (e.g. algorithmic thinking, abstraction, decomposition, generalization, patterns recognition, evaluation, and logical thinking). This framework, which can be applied to any subject at the elementary school level, is grounded on specific principles that we…
Mapping Network Structure and Diversity of Interdisciplinary Knowledge in Recommended Mooc Offerings
In massive open online courses (MOOCs), recommendation relationships present a collection of associations that imply a new form of integration, such as an interdisciplinary synergy among diverse disciplines. This study took a computer science approach, using the susceptible-infected (SI) model to simulate the process of learners accessing courses within networks of MOOC offerings, and emphasized the potential effects of a network structure. The c…
Networked Learning in 2021
Introduction (Networked Learning Editorial Collective): Since the turn of this century, much of the world has undergone a tectonic socio-technological change. Computers have left the isolated basements of research institutes and entered people's homes. Network connectivity has advanced from slow and unreliable modems to high-speed broadband. Devices have evolved: from stationary desktop computers to ever-present, always-connected smartphones. The…

Support through Social Media and Online Class Participation to Enhance Psychological Resilience
Social support was an important factor in minimizing the effect of social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. This research aimed to study the role of online class participation and social media usage to link the social support available from family and friends to psychological resilience among pre-service special education teachers against the negative psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. A survey was conducted w…
Breaching Learners’ Social Distancing through Social Media during the Covid-19 Pandemic
Higher education has been shifted toward blended learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. An increase in social media usage intensity and reduced face-to-face interaction due to the COVID-19 pandemic urged instructional communication researchers to revisit the dynamics of learners' group development in terms of their socialization and academic performance during the COVID-19 crisis. This research aimed to determine the mediating role of social medi…
Digital storytelling in the ecology of learning ( Relatos digitales personales en la ecología del aprendizaje )
Digital storytelling in the ecology of learning is a project which strives to understand digital storytelling in which youths capture an important aspect or event of their lives, give it meaning and share this meaning on social media. To do so, the goal is to better understand these new practices of posting content (posts, selfies, etc.) via a survey of more than 850 students aged 12 to 22, as well as with 20 or more in-depth interviews during th…
Getting smart
Many researchers agree that awareness of agency and how it is enacted through different participants holds a key role in developing digital literacy. Recognition of the ways in which digital tools can appropriate and shape humans’ semiotic work and even act out roles in communication is part of critical digital literacy. In digital environments, humans interact with the content (not just consume it) through interfaces that may include touchscreen…
Students' perceptions about online teaching effectiveness
The topic of online instructors’ roles has been of interest to the educational community since the late twentieth century. In previous studies, the identification of online instructors’ roles was done using a top-down (deductive) approach. This study applied a bottom-up (inductive) procedure to examine not only the roles of online instructors from a student perspective, but also how well these roles are implemented in practice. In the first stage…
Understanding student evaluations of teaching in online learning
In this paper, we have developed a classification model for online learning environments that relates the Instructors Overall Performance (IOP) rating (according to students’ perceptions) with the course characteristics, students’ demographics and the effectiveness of the instructor in his/her teaching roles. To that end, a comprehensive Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) instrument is proposed, which includes not only conventional teaching ele…
Factors influencing technology use by Mayan women in the digital age
We explore gender differences in technology use among Mayan-speakers in a rural community in southern Yucatan (Mexico), finding that women had poorer skills and less access to technology than men. Following a diagnosis, information and communication technology (ICT) skills training aimed at closing the digital divide was provided to 68 men and women, with post-test results indicating that while women improved their ICT skills, they continued to s…

Paradox of time in research on educational technology
Though the concept of time is fuzzily defined in education, it embraces many key teaching and learning aspects of the educational situation from scheduling (at the macro, meso, and micro level) through certification (i.e., credit requirements). It is also one of the determining factors within institutions for distance learning where education is almost always time and place independent and where learners and/or institutions make use of online and…
