  • The Flow Termini Coverage Model for Locating Bike-Sharing Stations

    Hung-Chi Liu, Hung‐Chi Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 29

As of 2022, more than 1,900 cities around the world had implemented bike-sharing systems (BSSs) with docking stations. Because there is a limit on how far most people are willing to walk to and from BSS stations, maximal coverage models have been a popular approach to optimizing dock station locations. Existing maximal coverage models, however, mainly evaluate demand coverage based on proximity to individual stations without considering the fact …

  • A multiobjective optimization model for locating affordable housing investments while maximizing accessibility to jobs by public transportation

Open Access•Qing Zhong, Alex Karner et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2019

This paper develops a new optimal location model for siting affordable housing units to maximize the accessibility of low-income workers to appropriate jobs by public transportation. Transit-accessible housing allows disadvantaged populations to reduce their reliance on automobiles, which can lead to savings on transportation-related expenditures. The housing location model developed here maximizes transit accessibility while reducing the cluster…

  • Transportation sustainability in the urban context

Selima Sultana, Deborah Salon et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Geography•2019

Although the term “sustainability” did not gain traction until the 1980s, concerns about the consequences of transportation technology started long before. This paper reviews the literature on urban transportation sustainability using three frameworks. First, urban transportation can be unsustainable environmentally, economically, and socially (the three pillars of sustainability). Second, sustainable strategies tend to fall into two paradigms. S…

  • Pavement Condition and Residential Property Values

    Open Access•Kihwan Seo, Deborah Salon et al.•ARTICLE•Public Works Management & Policy•2018•Referencias: 1

Transportation agencies invest billions of dollars every year in resurfacing roadways, ostensibly to improve the travel experience. When locally funded, one justification for increased expenditure on the pavement surface is that it could increase property values. We evaluated this approach directly, using hedonic regression to estimate the relationship between pavement condition and residential property value in Solano County, California. We hypo…

  • The Changing Structure of Energy Supply, Demand, and CO 2 Emissions in China

Michael Kuby, Canfei He et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2011•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 37

Because of its enormous population, rapid economic growth, and heavy reliance on coal, China passed the United States as the world's largest source of CO2 emissions in 2006. China is also becoming a major factor in the global oil market. This article analyzes China's energy production and consumption, with a focus on the energy and CO2 emissions per capita and per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) and the mix of energy sources and end uses. En…

  • Extracting High Points from Statistical Surfaces

Elizabeth A Wentz, Michael Kuby et al.•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2001

We introduce and test an algorithm for extracting high-point locations from statistical surface data. The algorithm uses map algebra and local neighborhood analysis via three key parameters: minimum vertical gain, vertical gain neighborhood, and horizontal separation neighborhood. Though the method is applicable to any x,y,z data set, we tested it on 1:250,000 digital elevation models (DEMs) for Arizona. The resulting high points were compared qu…

  • Experiences in developing a tourism web site for hiking Arizona's highest summits and deepest canyons

    Michael J Kuby, Michael Kuby et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Geographies•2001•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

Arizona's 20-20 Challenge is a web site for hikers, created for the Arizona Office of Tourism. The web site lists the 20 highest summit trails and the 20 deepest canyon trails of Arizona, and provides maps and information for each. The Challenge offers a southwestern twist on the increasingly popular concept of 'peak bagging', which is extended here for the first time to canyons. Developing the list proved to be more challenging than expected, in…

  • Technological Change and the Concentration of the U.S. General Cargo Port System

    Michael Kuby, Neil Reid•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1992•Citada por: 4

The diffusion of containerization has changed not only how general cargo is handled, but where. Using the Gini coefficient, we show that general cargo port traffic has become more concentrated from 1970 to 1988 because of four technological changes: containerization, larger ships, larger trains, and computerization of freight tracking and billing. These four technological changes have spawned four kinds of intermodal services: microbridge, minibr…

This paper develops a network-optimization planning methodology for U.S. coal port infrastructure. The model analyzes the economic and geographic impacts of harbor deepening and offshore topping-off, improvements which are considered essential for the U.S. to maintain export levels in the face of lower-cost competition because they enable loading of the largest coal supercolliers. The Coal Logistics System (COLS) is a mixed-integer programming mo…
