We Are Mathematical Beings
In this mathematical-poetical text, the author posits mathematical thought as fundamental to concepts of self and world. Mathematics is not something exterior to be learned, but basic to daily life. For example, object permanence is an abstract concept of multiple perspectives compiled in to the idea of one stable object. Such abstraction is mathematics. These concepts exist both socially and materially. A wooden cube is both a social concept and…
Deleuze, Bergson, and a Document Scanner
In this arts-based exploration, the author experiments with nonstandard time registers and perception via the possibilities opened up by the unconventional use of a handheld document scanner. Thanks to the technical configuration of the scanner, the artist is able to alter the time period spent on the different aspects of the object as it is scanned, creating images that alter our normalized perception of time. In addition, by directly scanning o…
Renovating Body and Space
In this article, the author has renamed the complicated conglomeration of the lived experience of the body-space as an "embody." An embody includes a body schema, extensions to that body schema, peripersonal space, space, and more-a sort of working map of self and world. An embody continually changes definition in interaction with culture, (architectural) habitats, clothes, tools, vehicles, others, and so forth. Multiple embodies are often simult…
Sealy Springs
In this post qualitative work of research fiction, the narrator chronicles a series of understandings of the personal and social functions of bedsprings. A fictional tale is used to present theory as situated and taken to logical extremes. The author uses a journal entry format to follow a series of conceptualizations of an unreliable narrator, conceptualizations that double back to disrupt the narrator's sense of self and society. The object of …
Here, We are Never Here
This article examines how user action and subjectivity interacts with the imperatives (program, curricula) of architecture. Embedded within designed space are assumptions, directives, possibilities and limits that affect the bodies/subjectivities inhabited by a user. Both by making explicit (de-constructing) the unspoken implications of architectonic language and by describing the embodied experience of daily usage, I depict the inherent paradox …

Living Hymns and Iterations
This text is a spiritual (re)search. I selected a local Pentecostal church that would align with and trouble the conservative Methodist Christian background with which I grew up. The text (re)creates this tension. How do I (re)create belief? How do I (re)construct ("preserve") reality? How do I preserve the Self in the face of a changing Other? How do I (re)construct the Other in the face of a changing Self? I explore and alter this border of Sel…
