  • A Multilevel Analysis of Support for Immigrants’ Social Rights in Latin America

    Open Access•J Fierro•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2026

Western theories and empirical comparative research on attitudes toward immigrants and their rights have largely overlooked Latin America. To address this gap, we conducted multilevel ordered logistic regression analyses on Latinobarómetro surveys from 17 countries (N = 19,004). The findings show that support for immigrants’ social rights is more contingent on immigration-related benefits—especially cultural enrichment—than on perceived threats. …

  • Public Support for the Accommodation of Religious Diversity

Open Access•J Fierro, Parella et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2025•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 69

Accommodating new religious communities has become a central issue in Western Europe. However, the role of religious identification in shaping intergroup relations still needs to be better understood. This study addresses this gap by analyzing the factors influencing public support for the accommodation of religious diversity, drawing on two statistically representative surveys conducted in Catalonia, Spain. The results revealed that religious id…

  • Social trust and support for immigrants' social rights in Spain

    J Fierro, Parella et al.•ARTICLE•New Community•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 49

Immigration is one of the most contested issues in contemporary political life because of its possible implications for state welfare provisions of receiving countries. There is a fear that rising immigration will erode public support for social policies that benefit immigrants, particularly in contexts of economic crisis. However, some believe that social trust is a determining factor that may mitigate such anti-immigrant attitudes. We test both…

  • Crowd work in STEM‐related fields

    Open Access•Alisa Petroff, J Fierro•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2022•Referencias: 6

After the Global Financial Crisis (2008) many people found new job opportunities on crowd platforms. The COVID‐19 crisis reinforced this trend and virtual work is expected to increase. Although the working conditions of individuals engaged on these platforms is an emerging topic, of research, the existing literature tends to overlook the gendered dimension of the gig economy. Following a quantitative approach, based on the statistical analysis of…

  • Generational cohorts versus national origin

    Open Access•J Fierro, Parella et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicities•2022•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 66

Over the last 25 years, Spain has experienced a significant increase of Latin American immigrants, which has raised questions about their children’s adaptation process. Yet, there is little evidence on the factors that explain school success or failure among this group. This paper aims to fill this gap by using data from the Longitudinal Study of the Second Generation in Spain (ILSEG is its Spanish acronym). The findings show that the children of…

  • Indigenous people, recognition, and democracy in Latin America

    J Fierro•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2020•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 49

Multicultural citizenship norms have been introduced in most Latin American countries. Some fear that this process may destabilize and undermine democratic institutions, while others believe that it contributes to strengthening democracy and restoring its legitimacy, especially among indigenous people. Multilevel regression analyses of the Latinobarómetro surveys from 2007 to 2017 reveal that indigenous people tend to express levels of support fo…
