An absolutely dated mid-Holocene English yew chronology offers new opportunities for archaeological and palaeoenvironmental research
Research on Holocene climate variability and human history greatly benefits from annually resolved and absolutely dated tree-ring chronologies. The quality and quantity of such records, however, decline back in time, with little tree-ring evidence available for the Early and Middle Holocene. Here, we present a tree-ring width (TRW) chronology from 100 subfossil yews ( Taxus baccata L.) excavated from peat-rich soils in the Fenland region of easte…
Arctic amplification causes earlier onset of seasonal tree growth in northeastern Siberia
Although recent warming affects the high-northern latitudes at an unprecedented rate, little is known about its impact on boreal forests because in situ observations from remote ecosystems in Siberia are sparse. Here, we analyse the radial growth and climate sensitivity of 54 Cajander larches ( Larix cajanderi Mayr.) from three sites across the northern treeline ecotone within the Omoloy river basin in northeastern Siberia. Three independent tree…
Long-term ecological consequences of forest fires in the continuous permafrost zone of Siberia
Wildfires are an important factor in controlling forest ecosystem dynamics across the circumpolar boreal zone. An improved understanding of their direct and indirect, short- to long-term impacts on vegetation cover and permafrost–vegetation coupling is particularly important to predict changes in carbon, nutrient and water cycles under projected climate warming. Here, we apply dendrochronological techniques on a multi-parameter dataset to reconst…
Trends In Elemental Concentrations of Tree Rings From the Siberian Arctic
The biogeochemistry and ecology of the Arctic environment have been heavily impacted by anthropogenic pollution and climate change. We used ICP-MS to measure concentrations of 26 elements in the AD 1300–2000 tree rings of larch from the Taymyr Peninsula in northern Siberia for studying the interaction between environmental change and wood chemistry. We applied a two-stage data reduction technique to identify trends in the noisy measurement data. …
Cooling and societal change during the Late Antique Little Ice Age from 536 to around 660 AD
Diverse growth trends and climate responses across Eurasia’s boreal forest
The area covered by boreal forests accounts for 16% of the global and 22% of the Northern Hemisphere landmass. Changes in the productivity and functioning of this circumpolar biome not only have strong effects on species composition and diversity at regional to larger scales, but also on the Earth's carbon cycle. Although temporal inconsistency in the response of tree growth to temperature has been reported from some locations at the higher north…
Cruising an archive
Today, there are only a handful of millennial-long and annually resolved tree-ring chronologies in existence. Explicit gaps in the global distribution of these regional chronologies together with an overall declining sample size back in time compel a community-wide challenge to discover new tree ring–based climate proxy records. Here, we present evidence for a yet unexplored palaeoenvironmental archive, define allied research tasks and emphasize …
Comparing forest measurements from tree rings and a space-based index of vegetation activity in Siberia
Different methods have been developed for measuring carbon stocks and fluxes in the northern high latitudes, ranging from intensively measured small plots to space-based methods that use reflectance data to drive production efficiency models. The field of dendroecology has used samples of tree growth from radial increments to quantify long-term variability in ecosystem productivity, but these have very limited spatial domains. Since the cambium m…
Year Tree-Ring Chronology for the Altai-Sayan Region (Western Tuva)
The current paper presents a new 1929-year tree-ring chronology for the Altai-Sayan region (Western Tuva) based on analyses of wood material from living trees and trunk remains of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ldb) from the upper treeline (2400 m asl). The correlations between tree-ring indices and meteorological data suggest that maximum effect on radial growth is produced by temperatures in June and July. This makes it possible to use the resu…
