  • The Hunter-Gatherer Use of Caves and Rockshelters in the American Midsouth: A geoarchaeological and spatial analysis of archaeological features at Dust Cave

    Lara K Homsey•BOOK•The hunter-gatherer use of caves…•2010

This study investigates the form, function, and organization of features at the Late Paleoindian through Middle Archaic site of Dust Cave, Alabama (US), using a multidisciplinary approach combining macromorphological, micromorphological, and chemical analyses. Previous studies have relied on observations made at the macroscopic level using morphological and/or content attributes, severely masking the diversity of activities they represent. A more…

  • What’s for Dinner? Investigating Food-Processing Technologies at Dust Cave, Alabama

    Lara K Homsey, Renee B Walker et al.•ARTICLE•Southeastern Archaeology•2010•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 5

Many models of hunter-gatherer subsistence have traditionally focused almost exclusively on what people ate. More recently, researchers have begun to ask how these ancient foods were processed and prepared prior to consumption, questions that are best answered by looking at the context in which food remains are uncovered. At the archaeological site of Dust Cave (1Lu496), excellent preservation conditions have resulted in a plethora of cooking fea…

  • Interpretation of Prepared Clay Surfaces at Dust Cave, Alabama

Lara Homsey, Lara K Homsey et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnoarchaeology•2010•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 9

This paper presents the results of actualistic studies conducted in order to provide insight into prehistoric cooking and processing technologies and their resulting archaeological remains. Excellent preservation conditions at Dust Cave, a deeply stratified Paleoindian through Middle Archaic site in northwest Alabama, have preserved numerous anthropogenic deposits whose function is unknown, including intentionally prepared, burned clay surfaces. …

  • Integrating geochemistry and micromorphology to interpret feature use at Dust Cave, a Paleo‐Indian through middle‐archaic site in Northwest Alabama

    Open Access•Lara K Homsey, Rosemary C Capo•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2006•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 21

The authors develop an integrated method using geochemistry and micromorphology to examine the use of archaeological features at Dust Cave, a Paleo‐Indian through Middle Archaic (10,650–3600 cal. B.C.) site in northwest Alabama. Samples analyzed using ICP‐AES for aluminum (Al), barium (Ba), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), sodium (Na), phosphorous (P), strontium (Sr), sulfur (S), and zinc (Zn) and suggest th…
