Development of infrastructure in Kenya, especially transportation infrastructure, began receiving partial financing investments by the Chinese government in 2014 as part of China’s broader Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). While there has been significant journalistic, academic, and governmental exploration of China’s new global investment strategies, less analysis has focused on local reactions to these new development relationships. • Potential effects of disruption to HIV programmes in sub-Saharan Africa caused by Covid-19

Open Access•Britta L Jewell, Edinah Mudimu et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet HIV•2020

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic could lead to disruptions to provision of HIV services for people living with HIV and those at risk of acquiring HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, where UNAIDS estimated that more than two-thirds of the approximately 38 million people living with HIV resided in 2018. We aimed to predict the potential effects of such disruptions on HIV-related deaths and new infections in sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: In this modelling st…

  • Predictable tone in Bena

    Michelle Morrison•ARTICLE•Africana Linguistica•2014

Verbal tone in Bena is characterized by a single High tone per word. Roots are toneless, and inflected forms are assigned one of four tone melodies : Pre‐Stem Initial (PSI), Macrostem Initial (MSI), Antepenultimate (APU), and Penultimate (PU). The location of H in an inflected form is entirely predictable through a combination of morphophonological criteria, including the morphological complexity of the verbal base, the tense and aspect of the ve…

  • Sagged phosphatic Nantgarw porcelain (ca. 1813-1820)

Open Access•J Victor Owens, J VICTOR OWEN et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1999•Referencias: 6

Nantgarw phosphatic (bone-ash) porcelain (ca. 1813–1820) is renowned for its translucency and the high quality of its enamel decoration. However, only a small proportion of its wares (perhaps 10%) were successfully fired due to sagging (body distortion) and other problems. This indicates that: (1) In terms of its potential for generating a minimum melt, the Nantgarw paste had an unusually fertile composition, or (2) Nantgarw's staff had difficult…
