  • Multifaceted determinants of social-emotional problems in preschool children in Sweden

Open Access•Masoud Vaezghasemi, Thomas Vogt et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2023

Social-emotional problems occurring early in life can place children at future risk of adverse health, social and economic outcomes. Determinants of social-emotional problems are multi-layered and originate from different contexts surrounding children, though few studies consider them simultaneously. We adopted a holistic approach by using Bronfenbrenner's process-person-context-time model as a structuring device. We aimed to assess what characte…

  • How fast should we innovate

    Open Access•Thomas Vogt•ARTICLE•Journal of Responsible Innovation•2016

The role of speed in innovations needs to be explored more thoroughly. I advocate here that for innovations which rely on scarce materials, research into more abundant substitutes needs to be accelerated while a regulatory-driven extension of the product life should slow down the number of incremental innovations and reduce our overall footprint on scarce resources. Chemical elements need to be established as global commons whose overuse can be r…

  • Using Physiological Dysregulation to Assess Global Health Status

    Open Access•Sarah E Hampson, Lewis R Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2009•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 21

Six measures of physiological dysregulation were derived from 11 clinically assessed biomarkers, and related to health outcomes and health behaviors for the Hawaii Personality and Health cohort ( N = 470). Measures summing extreme scores at one tail of the biomarker distributions performed better than ones summing both tails, and continuous measures performed better than count scores. Health behaviors predicted men's dysregulation but not women's…

  • Mechanisms by which childhood personality traits influence adult health status

    Sarah E Hampson, Lewis R Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•Health Psychology•2007

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test a life span health behavior model in which educational attainment and health behaviors (eating habits, smoking, and physical activity) were hypothesized as mechanisms to account for relations between teacher ratings of childhood personality traits and self-reported health status at midlife. DESIGN: The model was tested on 1,054 members of the Hawaii Personality and Health cohort, which is a populat…

  • Evaluating the public health impact of health promotion interventions

Russell E Glasgow, Thomas Vogt et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1999•Citada por: 116•Referencias: 37

Progress in public health and community-based interventions has been hampered by the lack of a comprehensive evaluation framework appropriate to such programs. Multilevel interventions that incorporate policy, environmental, and individual components should be evaluated with measurements suited to their settings, goals, and purpose. In this commentary, the authors propose a model (termed the RE-AIM model) for evaluating public health intervention…

  • Cost-Effectiveness of a Hospital-Based Smoking Cessation Intervention

    Richard T Meenan, Victor J Stevens et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1998•Referencias: 25

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of a smoking cessation and relapse-prevention program for hospitalized adult smokers from the perspective of an implementing hospital. It is an economic analysis of a two-group, controlled clinical trial in two acute care hospitals owned by a large group-model health maintenance organization. The intervention included a 20-minute bedside counseling session with an experienced health counselo…

  • A Clinical Trial of the Effects of Dietary Patterns on Blood Pressure

Lawrence J Appel, Thomas J Moore et al.•ARTICLE•New England Journal of Medicine•1997

BACKGROUND: It is known that obesity, sodium intake, and alcohol consumption factors influence blood pressure. In this clinical trial, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, we assessed the effects of dietary patterns on blood pressure. METHODS: We enrolled 459 adults with systolic blood pressures of less than 160 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressures of 80 to 95 mm Hg. For three weeks, the subjects were fed a control diet that was low in fruits,…

  • Comparing Health-Related Indicators of Very Old Hypertensives and Nonhypertensives in an HMO

Open Access•Richard E Johnson, L Douglas Ried et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•1994

The purpose of this study was to determine if very old hypertensives (85 years of age and over) were sicker and in poorer health than very old nonhypertensives. The authors compared the frequency of comorbidities, medical care and drug use, self-reported functional and health status, and health-related behaviors of very old hypertensive and nonhypertensive health maintenance organization (HMO) enrollees. Very old male hypertensives were less heal…

  • A Smoking-Cessation Intervention for Hospital Patients

    Victor J Stevens, Russell E Glasgow et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1993

Many patients attempt to stop smoking during hospitalization, but most relapse after discharge. This study developed and evaluated a brief smoking-cessation and relapse-prevention program for hospitalized smokers. All hospitalized smokers (n = 1,119) were identified by questionnaire at hospital admission and then received either usual care or usual care plus a hospital-based smoking-cessation intervention regardless of interest in stopping smokin…

  • Social networks as predictors of ischemic heart disease, cancer, stroke and hypertension

    Open Access•Thomas Vogt•ARTICLE•Journal of Clinical Epidemiology•1992

  • Home Blood Pressure Monitoring

Krikor Soghikian, Stephanie M Casper et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1992

The objective of this study was to determine whether a hypertension management program in which patients monitor their own blood pressure (BF) at home can reduce costs without compromising BP control. The prospective, randomized, controlled 1-year clinical trial was conducted at four medical centers of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program in the San Francisco Bay Area. Of 467 patients with uncomplicated hypertension who were referred by the…

  • Smoking cessation program

    Thomas Vogt, T M Vogt et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1979•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 9

One hundred and sixty-two smokers who participated in an aggressive smoking cessation program underwent analysis of expired air carbon monoxide (CO) and serum thiocyanate (SCN) at entry and one year later. Persons who failed to quit smoking had higher baseline CO and SCN and smoked more cigarettes per day than did those who succeeded in quitting. The use of CO, SCN, number of cigarettes smoked, age, and blood pressure at baseline permitted accura…

  • Expired air carbon monoxide and serum thiocyanate as objective measures of cigarette exposure

    Thomas Vogt, T M Vogt et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1977•Citada por: 21•Referencias: 16

Expired air carbon monoxide (CO) and serum thiocyanate (SCN) were used to asses exposure to cigarettes in 139 middle-aged men. Subjects who reported smoking cigarettes generally had CO levels exceeding 8ppm and SCN levels exceeding 100umol/L; non-smokers had lower levels. For both tests the mean concentration among men smoking more than one pack daily was three times that of non-smokers. The is a high correlation between the two tests (r=.571 for…
