  • Prototype Specificity Matters When Predicting Later Alcohol-Related Content Posting and Alcohol Use Among Adolescent and Young Adults

Megan Strowger, Allison Cross et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

Background: Drinking prototypes (i.e., images of the type of individual who engages in specific alcohol use behaviors) are associated with alcohol use, with self-identified similarity to the prototype possibly driving this connection more than one’s favorability of the prototype. Alcohol-related content (ARC; posts featuring alcohol or drinking) posting prototype favorability is also associated with ARC posting and drinking. However, the effects …

  • Examining Premeditation and Urgency as Moderators of the Longitudinal Association Between Alcohol-Induced Blackouts and Audit Scores Among Adolescents and Young Adults

Allison Cross, Scott Graupensperger et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2025

BACKGROUND: Adolescence and young adulthood are developmental periods where both initiation and escalation of alcohol consumption is common. While existing literature highlights the potential role alcohol-induced blackouts (AIBs) may have on the development of alcohol use disorders as well as how impulsivity is associated with alcohol use, research to date has not been conducted within the United States. Therefore, this study aimed to examine lon…

  • First Comes Substance Use, Then Comes Social Media Posts? Examining the Temporal Ordering and Relative Strength of Relations Across Alcohol, Tobacco and Marijuana Use and Posting Behavior

Femke Geusens, Melissa A Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2024

Social media posts represent a major route by which youth share their substance use cognitions and experiences with others. Extant research has primarily examined relations between alcohol-related posts and posters' own alcohol use, yet little is known about the role of social media in the use of less socially accepted substances, namely tobacco and marijuana. Our study represents the first to examine the relative strength of this relation across…

  • Age and Fear of Missing Out as Moderators of the Association between Peak Drinks and Alcohol-Induced Blackouts among Adolescents and Young Adults

Melissa A Lewis, Zhengyang Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2023

Background: Alcohol-induced blackouts are periods of impaired memory in which an individual is unable to recount events that occurred while they were intoxicated and are associated with heavier drinking episodes. Objectives: The present study examined age and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) as moderators of the association between peak number of drinks and experiencing alcohol-induced blackouts. Participants ages 15–25 (N = 411; Mean age = 21.4 (SD = …

  • Frequency and Timing of Sent and Received Alcohol-Related Text Messages

    D Litt, Emma Kannard et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2023

Background: Research supports the notion that adolescents and young adults communicate about alcohol via text messages and that this form of communication is associated with alcohol use. However, little is known about how this compares to social media content sharing or about the timing of sending and receiving alcohol-related text messages and associations with alcohol-related outcomes. The present study aimed to 1) document whether adolescents …

  • A Dyadic Examination of Interpersonal Electronic Surveillance

Open Access•D Litt, Lucía Masa Rodríguez•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2022

Interpersonal electronic surveillance (IES) refers to monitoring a partner's location, conversations, and other private information such as search history. Although IES has been linked to relationship functioning, this work does not take into account the dyadic nature of relationships using data from both members of a dating pair. Thus, this study aimed to document rates and concordance of IES perpetration among a college sample of dating pairs, …

  • Likelihood of Posting Alcohol-Related Content on Social Networking Sites – Measurement Development and Initial Validation

Rose Marie Ward, Tara M Dumas et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2022

Background: The vast majority of adolescents and young adults are active on social networking sites (SNSs). SNSs are influential, risk-conducive environments for alcohol use among adolescents and young adults. Specifically, posting or sharing alcohol-related content (ARC) is associated with higher levels of alcohol use. However, it is unknown if sharing different types of ARC associates differentially with alcohol use and consequences. Objective:…

  • Behavioral Willingness, Descriptive Normative Perceptions, and Prescription Stimulant Misuse among Young Adults 18-20

    Nicole Fossos-Wong, D Litt et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2022

Objective: It is critical to gain further understanding of etiologic factors, such as descriptive normative perceptions and behavioral willingness, that are associated with prescription stimulant misuse (PSM) among young adults. Our primary hypotheses were that descriptive normative perceptions for PSM (i.e., perceptions of how much and how often others engage in PSM) and perceived peer willingness (i.e., perceptions of how open others are to PSM…

  • Examining Associations Between Social Networking Site Alcohol-Specific Social Norms, Posting Behavior, and Drinking to Cope During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•D Litt, Lucía Masa Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Cyberpsychology Behavior and…•2021

Emerging research suggests that there may be important links between social networking site (SNS) use and alcohol consumption specific to COVID-19. In addition, substantial research indicates that descriptive normative perceptions are a strong predictor of drinking behavior more generally. However, less is known about SNS-specific norms and how they might be associated with health-related behavior. Thus, the primary goal of this study was to dete…

  • An Examination of the Relative Associations of Prototype Favorability, Similarity, and Their Interaction With Alcohol and Alcohol-Related Risky Sexual Cognitions and Behavior

    Open Access•D Litt, Melissa A Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Emerging Adulthood•2018

Prototypes are defined as the image a person holds of the typical person who engages in risk behavior and are comprised of favorability toward the prototype and similarity to the prototype. Despite both being posited as important prototype dimensions, the findings regarding their predictive utility are mixed, and most research has focused on alcohol use and not other related risk behaviors. Thus, the present study examined whether both prototype …

  • Understanding differences in alcohol consumption and depressed mood between U.S.- and foreign-born Asian and Caucasian college students

    Jih-Cheng J Yeh, Sharon H Hsu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2015

The number and proportion of foreign-born individuals in the U.S. population has increased in recent decades. From 1970 to 2007, the foreign-born population more than tripled to approximately 37 million (U.S. Census Bureau, 1997 , 2008 ). Foreign-born students are a key subpopulation of college students. About 23% of U.S. undergraduate college students in 2007-2008 were either born outside of the United States (10%) or were children of at least o…

  • Underestimating Protection and Overestimating Risk

    Melissa A Lewis, D Litt et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•2012•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 6

Individuals who engage in risky sexual behavior face the possibility of experiencing negative consequences. One tenet of social learning theory is that individuals engage in behaviors partly based on observations or perceptions of others' engagement in those behaviors. The present study aimed to document these norms-behavior relationships for both risky and protective sexual behaviors, including alcohol-related sexual behavior. Gender was also ex…

  • Adolescent alcohol-related risk cognitions

D Litt, Dana M Litt et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Addictive Behaviors•2011

The present study examined the impact of socially based descriptive norms on willingness to drink alcohol, drinker prototype favorability, affective alcohol attitudes, and perceived vulnerability for alcohol-related consequences within the Prototype Willingness model. Descriptive norms were manipulated by having 189 young adolescents view experimenter-created profile pages from the social networking site Facebook, which either showed older peers …

  • The Power of the Name Essex in 3Henry VI

    Open Access•D Litt, Dorothy E Litt•ARTICLE•Names•1993

The relationship between Queen Elizabeth I and her favorite, the Earl of Essex, reveals a complex of names and naming. There is a textual variant in 3Henry VI in which the shire name Essex has been omitted. From this, it appears that the omission is the result of censorship and that the unknown play performed before the Queen on the very eve of Essex's execution was 3Henry VI

  • The Poetics and Politics of Naming

    Open Access•D Litt, Dorothy E Litt•ARTICLE•Names•1991

In a manuscript poem by Sir Walter Ralegh, the poet as “Ocean” makes his complaint to a cold and cruel lady, “Cynthia” (the moon). Naming serves as a counterpoint to his argument, which establishes a dialectic of despair set against hope, the poem ending in an epiphany of faith in an eventual restoration to his lady's favor. The cruel lady is Queen Elizabeth, which gives the poem an added political dimension
