Survival among patients with cancer after a coalmine fire
Background In 2014, a bushfire ignited the Hazelwood coalmine in regional Victoria, Australia, shrouding nearby communities in smoke for 6 weeks. In this study, we examined whether survival decreased among people with cancer in smoke-exposed areas. Methods We identified cancers diagnosed between January 2009 and February 2014, the start of the coalmine fire, from the Victorian Cancer Registry. Tumours were grouped by location as well as subtypes …
Are mortality rates similar between jobs in the Queensland coal mine workers’ cohort
Although a relatively young cohort, mortality risk varied by type of work. Risk of death from circulatory causes was increased in some workers, even after adjusting for smoking. Suicide rates are higher for men and women doing Production jobs
The psychological impacts of a smoke event on young adults compared to other aged adults in Victoria, Australia
Mental Health Outcomes in Australian Healthcare and Aged-Care Workers during the Second Year of the Covid-19 Pandemic
Australian HCWs employed during 2021 experienced adverse mental health outcomes, with prevalence differences observed according to occupation. Longitudinal evidence is needed to inform workplace strategies that support the physical and mental wellbeing of HCWs at organisational and state policy levels

Using a Qualitative Phenomenological Approach to Inform the Etiology and Prevention of Occupational Heat-Related Injuries in Australia
Epidemiological evidence has shown an association between exposure to high temperatures and occupational injuries, an issue gaining importance with environmental change. The aim of this study was to better understand contributing risk factors and preventive actions based on personal experiences. Interviews were conducted with 21 workers from five Australian states using a critical phenomenological approach to capture the lived experiences of part…
Symptom attribution and treatment seeking in Australian veterans
To understand the role of symptom attribution in treatment-seeking behaviours, survey results of 1356 veterans (age = 38-72 years) were analysed. Controlling for symptom frequency, significant relationships were found for specialist and psychological-related consultations. Those who favoured psychological explanations for symptoms were more likely to attend specialist and psychology-related consultations and filled significantly more prescription…
Uncertainty Analysis of Mobile Phone Use and Its Effect on Cognitive Function
Previous epidemiological studies on health effects of radiation exposure from mobile phones have produced inconsistent results. This may be due to experimental difficulties and various sources of uncertainty, such as statistical variability, measurement errors, and model uncertainty. An analytical technique known as the Monte Carlo simulation provides an additional approach to analysis by addressing uncertainty in model inputs using error probabi…
Health Care Provider Communication and the Duration of Time Loss Among Injured Workers
BACKGROUND: In addition to providing injured workers with biomedical treatment, health care providers (HCPs) can promote return to work (RTW) through various communications. OBJECTIVES: To test the effect of several types of HCP communications on time loss following injury. RESEARCH DESIGN: The authors analyzed survey and administrative claims data from a total of 730 injured workers in Victoria, Australia. Survey responses were collected around …
Life satisfaction and quality in Korean War veterans five decades after the war
BACKGROUND: Military service is considered to be a hidden variable underlying current knowledge about well-being in the elderly. This study aimed to examine life satisfaction and quality of life in Australia's surviving male Korean War veterans and a community comparison group, and to investigate any association with war deployment-related factors. METHODS: Participants completed a postal questionnaire which included the Life Satisfaction Scale, …
Reproductive health of male Australian veterans of the 1991 Gulf War
The results of this study do not show an increased risk of adverse reproductive outcome in Australian male Gulf War veterans
