Moving beyond the formal
Conversations and networks are essential for transforming academics’ teaching practices as learning experiences (Palmer 1993). Yet, there has been little research reporting academics’ informal conversations about teaching (Thomson and Trigwell 2018). Teachers will generally access small significant networks (Becher and Trowler 2001) for nuanced and personal issues relating to teaching and learning. Collaborative transnational projects provide fer…
Integration of Artificial Intelligence in Academia
This study scrutinizes the role of AI literacy and ChatGPT-3 in enhancing critical reasoning and journalistic writing competencies among 50 third-term journalism students at Tajik National University. Given the escalating relevance of AI across sectors, including journalism, we aim to highlight the potential advantages of incorporating AI utilities in journalism pedagogy. We utilized a mixed- methods approach, comprising both quantitative and qua…
Breast cancer services in Vietnam
BACKGROUND: Breast cancer incidence has been increasing consistently in Vietnam. Thus far, there have been no analytical reviews of research produced within this area. OBJECTIVES: We sought to analyse the nature andextent of empirical studies about breast cancer in Vietnam, identifying areas for future research and systemsstrengthening. METHODS: We undertook a scoping study using a five-stage framework to review published and grey literature in E…
Metabolic syndrome among 13 year old adolescents
Our results provide the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Malaysian adolescents. Adequate sleep between 7 and 9 hours per day reduces the risk of developing metabolic syndrome
An exploratory study on risk factors for chronic non-communicable diseases among adolescents in Malaysia
Our results demonstrated that adolescents from the rural area are at higher risk of NCDs compared to their urban counterpart. Tailor made public health interventions are highly recommended for adolescents as this may minimise the dreadful NCD burden in adulthood and health disparity between the rural and urban in the near future
Fitness level and body composition indices
Only 9.6% of the students were fit. There was also an inverse association between body composition and fitness score among apparently healthy adolescents, with waist circumference indicated as the strongest predictor. The low fitness level among the Malaysian adolescent should necessitate the value of healthy lifestyle starting at a young age
The effectiveness of a life style modification and peer support home blood pressure monitoring in control of hypertension
The present study will evaluate the effect of lifestyle modification and peer support home blood pressure monitoring on blood pressure control, during a 6 month intervention period. Moreover, the study aims to assess whether these effects can be sustainable more than six months after the intervention has ended
O6-2.4 Early life exposures and the development of testicular cancer in Northern Ireland
Objectives To investigate perinatal risk factors for testicular cancer in a Northern Ireland population cohort. Methods Perinatal data have been routinely recorded in Northern Ireland for all births in the period 1971–1986 (n=447, 663). Testicular cancer status was ascertained in this cohort by identifying 249 individuals diagnosed from 1971 to 2008 and date of birth in the period 1971–1986. Results Increased testicular cancer risk was associated…
P1-163 Increased incidence and detection rates of carcinoma in situ of the breast
Background Increased incidence of carcinoma in situ (CIS) has generally been attributed to widespread application of mammography screening. However, direct evidence for the impact of screening is rare. Methods Screen detected and total CIS (ICD-10 D05) incidence data were obtained, between 1990 and 2007 where possible, from regional cancer registries in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (ROI). Age-standardised incidence rates for the UK and ROI,…
Do Changes in Illness Perceptions Predict Changes in Psychological Distress among Oesophageal Cancer Survivors
This study aimed to examine whether changes in the illness perceptions of oesophageal cancer survivors explain changes in their levels of psychological distress relative to demographic and biomedical variables and coping strategies. Oesophageal cancer survivors completed the Illness Perception Questionnaire - Revised, the Cancer Coping Questionnaire and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale at two points in time, 12 months apart. Cluster anal…
Using blogs to help language students to develop reflective learning strategies
Due to the social changes brought about in no small part by Web 2.0 tools, the potential impact of the blog writing phenomenon upon teaching and learning contexts reveals an important area for consideration for all university educators, and in particular for e-learning practitioners. Today, web users may access a wide variety of media to express themselves and to communicate with others. These may include conventional blog websites such as blogge…
Association between breast-feeding and anthropometry and CVD risk factor status in adolescence and young adulthood
Objective To examine the association between breast-feeding and blood pressure, anthropometry and plasma lipid profile in both adolescence and young adulthood. Design Longitudinal study of biological and behavioural risk factors for CVD. Setting The Young Hearts Project, Northern Ireland. Subjects Schoolchildren aged 12 years and 15 years who participated in a cross-sectional study of lifestyle and health, and who were followed up as young adults…
Tracking of energy and nutrient intakes from adolescence to young adulthood
ObjectiveTo assess tracking of energy and nutrient intakes between adolescence and young adulthood.DesignLongitudinal study of a random sample of adolescents (aged 15 years at baseline).
