Everyday nationhood and digital media
Studies into media and migration have offered significant contributions but often emphasise short-term research, assuming migrants’ nationalism is sustained over time. To address this gap, this study adopts an ‘ethnographic returning’ method to further develop the theory of long-distance nationalism. It examines how Japanese cultural migrants in New York City and London negotiated their sense of national identity during the early migration phase …
Intersection of Class and Gender in Foodwork
Working Mothers and the Meaning of Paid Work
How Do Working Mothers Engage in Children’s Education at Home
Rationalizing Foodwork at Home
Young Japanese `Cultural Migrants’ and the Construction of their Imagined West
Migration theories tend to focus on economic and political aspects as migrationinducing factors. However, in recent years, a large number of young Japanese have been migrating to New York City, London, and other Western cities for the purpose of engaging in the production of arts and popular culture. By using ‘multisited ethnography’, the present study finds that not only economic and/or political factors but also cultural factors can act as the …

Fabricating Japaneseness? The Identity Politics of Young Designers and Artists in Global Cities
The present study explores the identity politics of young Japanese designers and artists working across national boundaries today. It addresses the following research questions: (i) Do young designers and artists aim to produce works with “universal” appeal or strategically make use of “Japaneseness”? (ii) Do they develop new transnational identities or regard themselves as “Japanese”? and (iii) Who do they think has the power to label their work…
Cultural Migrants from Japan
In recent years, a large number of young Japanese have been migrating to New York and London for the purpose of engaging in cultural production in areas such as dance, fashion, DJing, film, and pop arts in the hope of "making it" as artists. In the past, this kind of cultural migration was restricted to relatively small, elite groups, such as American artists in Paris in the 1920's, butCultural Migrants from Japanlooks at the phenomenon of tens o…
