Stone panopticum
Stone as a durable and symbolic material played a central role in the visual culture and social practices of Histrian communities during the last millennium BCE. This paper examines the fragmented stone sculpture from Nesactium (Croatia), focussing on its meaning, function and cultural context. Using the concepts of material agency and object biography, it shows how these monuments, in addition to their monumentality, structured space and belongi…
Shifting tin imports into the broader Eastern Mediterranean region during the Bronze and Early Iron Ages (ca. 2000-900 BC)
Lacking substantial local tin deposits after 2000 BC, the Eastern Mediterranean depended on the importation of large quantities of tin from extraneous sources. Situated roughly equidistant (ca. 3000 km) between the large tin deposits of Western Europe and Central Asia, both localities have been proposed as potential sources of tin metal used in Eastern Mediterranean bronze production. However, such speculation must be substantiated. Herein, we as…
Cvrtkovci hoard in the context of the potential of the Late Bronze Age hoards from Bosnia
The hoards from northern Bosnia, especially those along the wider stream area of river Bosna, are culturally and technologically interpreted in close connection with the emanating pattern of their manifestation in the wider area of south-western Pannonia and the extremely rich Posavina region within it. Data on 11 hoards in the region currently exists, with around 570 items and fragments recorded within these. Most hoards are considered to be rep…
New Late Bronze Age hoard from Srebrenik
Late Bronze Age hoard from Srebrenik it turned up by chance in May 2016. It was discovered in shallow pit on the slope of the hill facing down towards small stream in the village Rapatnice near Srebrenik (Tuzla Canton). It consists of over 150 pieces divided into 5 groups: weapons, tools, ornaments, bronze sheets and raw materials (ingots), which defined the hoard to be of l…
Ornamented bronze phalerae with a thorn
The presented research deals with ornamented bronze phalerae with a thorn from several cultural groups from the territory of the Northern Adriatic and its hinterland. It was motivated by the treating of such a phalera discovered in Osor on the island of Cres in Kvarner. Considered and critically evaluated in a broader cultural context, the phalerae were formally analysed and due to their stylistic features divided in to four basic types with furt…
Hellenistic bell-shaped situlae with ivy leaves
Situla art, as a specific visual and semantic synthesis, connected numerous culturally different societies of the prehistoric and historic Iron Age of Europe. Situlae themselves, which gave the name to this art phenomenon, were not only carriers of artistic expression and symbolic narrative, but also reflected a cognitive maturity and sublimation of society as an accepted emblem of the way individual aristocracies represented their status. The ar…
Kvarner u starijem zeljeznom dobu sjevernog Jadrana
[Kvarner v času železne dobe severnega Jadrana] V starejši železni dobi severnega Jadrana je poleg Istre imel posebno mesto tudi Kvarner. Njegovo vlogo in pomen v komunikacijah in kroženju blaga v tistem času nakazujejo starejše in novejše raziskave. čeprav so se v zadnjih dveh desetletjih izvajale predvsem zaščitne arheološke raziskave, je bilo poleg posameznih najdb zbrano veliko novega gradiva, nekaj tudi povsem nepričakovanega. V članku je pr…
Reflection of actions
The hoard from Moravička Sela in Gorski Kotar (Croatia), discovered thirty years ago, is a medium-sized hoard with a mixed composition, containing typologically different and differently preserved objects. With its defined, most likely reduced inventory, we have acquired a smaller number of tools and weapons, half products and items of symbolic importance. Its place of discovery could be included in the distribution of the hoards of the II Late B…

Ritualizing Helmets – Symbolic Protocol of the Iron Age in Dolenjska
The ritualization of helmets, along with fragmentation and hybridization, is a well-known fact in the wider area of South-Eastern Europe. It is apparent on the numerous examples of the helmets of the Illyrian type, interpreted in various contexts, for various purposes and in different ways. In the territory of Dolenjska (Slovenia), two Illyrian helmets of the type III A found in the grave VII/19 at Kapiteljska njiva in Novo Mesto present an excep…
The Amphora from Osor
The paper presents the amphora from Osor discovered during the research excavations in the monastery and church of St. Peter in Osor. It is an urn in the form of an amphora lacking closer comparisons in the adjacent Late Bronze and Early Iron Age cultural groups, but exhibits similarities with the urns of the continental Late Bronze Age, especially the Ruše cultural group. Due to its formal and stylistic characteristics, as well as the results of…
