  • Peripheral News Workers’ Autonomy

    Open Access•Monika Metyková, Lenka Waschková Císařová•ARTICLE•Journalism Practice•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 26

In this article, we revisit some of the debates about changing journalistic labour that have first emerged when digital technologies became widely available in newsrooms. The terms multiskilling, deskilling, up-skilling and re-skilling have been applied in a variety of contexts and in a range of studies, but explorations of journalistic labour have tended to focus on core (news) workers. The de-skilling debate that originated in Braverman’s work …

  • Peripheral news workers expelled to the periphery

    Open Access•Lenka Waschková Císařová, Monika Metyková•ARTICLE•Journalism•2020•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 33

The professionals behind television cameras are peripheral contributors to journalism who are often overlooked in journalistic research in contrast with co-workers who occupy clearly demarcated journalistic roles. In this article, we use the term camera reporters rather than the more frequently used terms such as cameramen or camera operators as we argue that these professionals are part of the journalistic field and their job titles in themselve…

  • Bridge Guard

    Monika Metyková•ARTICLE•East Central Europe•2014•Referencias: 4

This article concentrates on an artist-in-residence project that is linked to the Mária Valéria Bridge on the border between Slovakia and Hungary. The article traces the history of the bridge and of the ethnically mixed populations living on the opposite sides of the Danube River that the bridge connects in order to suggest the complexity of the cross-border relationships in this particular corner of Europe. In more recent decades relationships b…

    Monika Metyková•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2010•Citada por: 19•Referencias: 7

In May 2004 the European Union was enlarged by ten new member states, eight of these were countries from the former Communist bloc. Between May 2004 and May 2006 the citizens of so-called EU8 countries (Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovak Republic and Slovenia) enjoyed full worker mobility in only three ‘old’ EU member states, the Republic of Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Following EU enlargement, migrant…

  • I didn’t realize how attached I am

Open Access•Shaun Moore, Shaun Moores et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2010•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 7

This article presents findings from a qualitative research project on the environmental experiences of trans-European migrants, drawing on conversational interviews with young people who have moved to Britain over recent years from the new European Union Member States in Eastern Europe. It explores these migrants’ practical and emotional relationships with physical (and media) environments, also drawing on the literature of phenomenological geogr…

  • Knowing How to Get Around

Shaun Moore, Shaun Moores et al.•ARTICLE•The Communication Review•2009•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 18

In this article, we follow a lead in Roger Silverstone's work by engaging critically with the writings of human geographers who have drawn on phenomenology in their attempts to understand environmental perception and senses of place. A distinctive feature of the approach that these geographers developed was its focus on the ordinary doings and feelings involved in place-making. We highlight a series of concepts that are found in their writings an…
