Ordinary Saints

Montréal and Kingston: McGill-Queen's University Press, 2019. 332 p. The Roman Catholic Church in which I grew up seemed to be dominated by men. The Canny Scot
A paradoxical prelate to many, Archbishop James Morrison was the spiritual head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, from 1912 to 1950. Traditional, frugal, and aloof, he was also the ecclesiastical leader of a progressive program of Catholic social action that became known as the "Antigonish Movement." Elevated to bishop after a successful clerical career in Prince Edward Island, Morrison guided Catholics in eastern Nova Sco…
Living Words
Peter Ludlow shows how word meanings are much more dynamic than we might have supposed, and explores how they are modulated even during everyday conversation. The resulting view is radical, and has far-reaching consequences for our political and legal discourse, and for enduring puzzles in the foundations of semantics, epistemology, and logic
Norms of Word Meaning Litigation
In this paper I examine cases in which we attach different meanings to words and in which we litigate or argue about the best way of defining the term in dispute. I reject the idea that this is just a matter of imposing our will on our interlocutors – I think that the process of litigation is normative. To some extent recent work in the theory of argumentation has shed considerable light on this process, but we will need to retrofit that work for…
Tensism
Tensism is the doctrine that tense (like past and future tense) is not eliminable and not reducible to non-tensed facts. We can distinguish two kinds of tensism – metaphysical tensism and linguistic tensism. Metaphysical tensism is the doctrine that reality itself is tensed and that these tensed facts are not reducible to more basic untensed facts. Linguistic tensism is the idea that natural language is tensed and that natural language tense is n…
Contextualism, Multi‐Tasking, and Third‐Person Knowledge Reports
In the mid-90’s, beginning with his seminal paper “Solving the Skeptical Problem,” and in a series of subsequent papers, Keith DeRose became a key figure defending the doctrine of contextualism in epistemology. Behind DeRose’s unrelenting series of arguments, contextualism came to be viewed as one of the principle candidate answers to the skeptical problem. The traditional skeptic, recall, challenges our claims of knowledge (for example, my claim…
The Philosophy of Generative Linguistics
This work explores some of the many interesting philosophical issues that arise in the conduct of generative linguistics. There are three basic themes that are woven throughout the work. The first theme is that generative linguistics at its best is concerned with understanding and explanation, and not just with observation and data gathering. Generative linguistics is interested in underlying mechanisms that give rise to language related phenomen…

The International Protestant Community in the Second World War
The title requires some explanation. There is no satisfactory generic term to cover the institutions and groups discussed in this paper. I have opted for ‘International Protestant Community’, because it he seems on the whole less unsatisfactory than the term ‘ecumenical movement’, which in contemporary parlance at least must include within its scope Catholics as well as non-Catholics. Even the narrower term has its defects, however, since many of…
