Roman Metal in a Greek City
The article presents new data on a large collection of oval-trapezoidal buckles from Tauric Chersonesos. In European literature, such buckles are known as Raddatz type C. Most of the Chersonesos specimens lack precise provenance information. Their date is established on the basis of comparable finds from assemblages of the mid- to second half of the 1st century AD. The subsistence systems of ancient societies included three components: [i] the resource base, [ii] the eco-nomic model and [iii] the social sphere. The article discusses the main elements of the subsistence systems of the Sabativskaya and Belozerskaya cultures of the Late Bronze Age in Northwestern Crimea. A study of the details of Roman military belts found in Tauric Chersonese by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy made it possible to determine that almost all of them were made of zinc-containing alloys, that is, two- or multi-component brasses (Cu-Zn, Cu-Zn-Sn, Cu-Zn-Pb, Cu-Zn-Sn-Pb).
