Rural returns
This paper examines the influences and gendered life aspirations of a group of young Xhosa South Africans. Through ethnographic fieldwork with 17 young people in the Eastern Cape city of East London, I demonstrate the influence of visual media on their migration to the city and subsequent disillusionment with urban life that has led to a desire for rural return. This article examines how race, gender, and generation influence ethnographers' ethical decision-making in the field. We consider how decisions to intervene engage these complex variables, which are both cultural and historical constructs as well as lived experiences that researchers and interlocutors differently embody over time. The Sonke Gender Justice Network, a South African non‐governmental organization that strives for gender equity and strengthening democratic institutions, was founded in 2006 and has a long history of diverse community programming and advocacy. Policing the (post)colonial body
In March 2020, South Africa enacted one of the world's most severe lockdowns to combat the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Whilst this action received international praise, its implementation by the armed security forces in many ways mirrored colonial and apartheid-era controls on movement, such as violent policing and curfews. Can children's maps shed light on legacies of structural inequality? This article presents a participatory mapping project with rural youth in South Africa's Eastern Cape. The analysis of the maps demonstrates that intergenerational legacies of racial oppression are critical to children's conceptions of space and place. Nostalgia in the post-apartheid state
In this article, I join recent theorists in furthering an "anthropology of nostalgia," seeking connections between disparate parts of the globe through a shared sense of loss in the face of global capitalism and liberal democracy. Highlighting contemporary work, I suggest linkages between seemingly disparate regional foci.
