An early medieval sword with a Carolingian K-type pommel from Varín in Northwestern Slovakia
Early medieval swords, Carolingian or Viking, are treated and usually discussed in the literature as finds related to elites. In real life, however, second-grade swords were also made, and old and used weapons were repaired and traded. Lower-quality items were used by people with aspirations who could not afford to acquire expensive signs of status. Here, the author describes the find of a Carolingian-type sword from Varín in Northwestern Slovaki…
Tracing the origins
First lead isotope analyses of early medieval lead ingots and ornaments from Great Moravian sites. • Provenance data indicate links with ore deposits of Upper Silesia and the Kraków Upland in southern Poland. • Data support the exploitation of these ore districts in the late 9th–10th c. • Lead ingot masses correspond to a Carolingian weight system of 408 g to the pound. • Results demonstrate long-distance metal exchange networks within the Great …
Revisiting early medieval chronologies
This article examines the chronology of Great Moravian hillfort construction using radiocarbon data from the Bojná agglomeration, one of the key centres of early medieval settlement in the Middle Danube Basin. Based on an analysis of 79 radiocarbon dates from five sites, a refined chronological model is proposed for the agglomeration’s development in the 6th–10th centuries. The findings challenge the widely accepted view that hillfort constructio…
Radiocarbon Dating of St. George’s Rotunda in Nitrianska Blatnica (Slovakia)
In 2021, a series of radiocarbon dates for St. George’s Rotunda in Nitrianska Blatnica (Slovakia) was published. The samples were acquired during restoration work. Based on the analysis, the authors dated the rotunda to the period of around AD 820–887, with 86% of the probability distribution lying in the period before AD 863. The chronology is based on the combined radiocarbon date 1191 ± 10 BP, which was obtained from four samples of wood fragm…
Včasnostredoveké opaskové kovania typu Bojná. Nové nálezy
The paper offers a new perspective on a series of Great Moravian belt-ends of the Bojná type, dated to the second half of the 9 th c. and especially to the end of the 9 th c.New finds, mainly from the Bojná-Valy hill fort, allow us to add another variant to the type and to change our view on the distribution of these belt-ends.The distribution of the belt-ends reflects the borders of the Nitra province at the end of the 9 th c., as well as its ce…

Garnitury okuć rzemieni i inne elementy ozdobne wielkomorawskich mieczy
The Early Carolingian spur from Smolenice, found in 1934
2 I made this mistake myself when I used a drawing of the spur in the "Bojn 2" and considered it an analogy for the spur from Bojn-ihavnk (Robak 2017a, 60, 61). Fortunately, the mistake does not undermine the validity of analysis presented there. Once again, however, it shows that is better to be safe than sorry and to control the sources carefully. Although T. Kind (2007, 587, no. 30) mentions the spur among mit gebuckelten sen und
