The Agricolan fort at Fendoch
Report on excavations in 1936 and 1937. The unusual rectangular form of the fort was dictated by the space available. Features examined included the rampart, ditch and intervallum and the east gateway. All the internal features (principia, praetorium, granaries, barracks, ovens) were examined and evidence was found to suggest that the fort had been deliberately dismantled. Artefacts included an unbroken sword from a foundation trench of the princ…
Excavations at Birrens, 1936-37
In the original excavation no attempt was made to discover whether the two structural periods accounted for the whole or only a part of the occupation of Birrens by the Romans; dating evidence was limited to inscriptions and coins. It is argued on the basis of further excavation that the phases originally identified were only a part of the total occupation and that the fort was re-occupied in the third century and continued into the fourth. Perhaps the most remarkable of the various forms of decorated ‘Samian’ vessels is the jug or vase which is the main subject of this paper. Previously, the precise shape of these vessels was a matter of doubt, the recorded fragments being incomplete, generally lacking neck, handle and base. An attempt was made in 1933 to restore fragments existing in London on the lines of the St. Rémy green-glazed form, Déchelette 62, but this restoration has bee…
